What really happens to Barnaby at the end?

I loved this book but was left so sad and empty by its final pages. It seems to end with this young boy choosing death over conforming to his parents idea of how he should be. I need to know if anyone else saw it that way. There is nothing at all above his skylight! And surely he is out of non-traditional flying objects to run into.

I agree with you. Throughout the story, the thing that Barnaby was always saying was that they were his family, and he loved them. I didn't like the ending and was hoping for his parents to finally love him. Maybe that was a bit to predictable, but I was also expecting more. A x

There is a mention of a helicopter flying around above the Sydney Harbour Bridge, if I remember correctly. There is a remote chance that he gets saved again, in which case I'm sure he would find a way to live as himself.
I was always really disappointed that he didn't exert any control whatsoever over what is essentially the power of flight. In the end, he didn't really own who he was, he just let himself disappear. He should have had a retractable grappling hook or something!
