The library was one of the few places in the city that was peaceful. Tobias, being the introvert that he was, found solace in browsing through the growing selection of books with minimal social interaction. He sat at his usual table near the back of the library, his left hand resting in a hardcover book, occasionally drawing his thumb beneath a page to continue reading. His other hand rested on the table, an aluminum splint encasing his ring finger. He'd had another accident concerning his ability. While eating lunch the other day, he unknowingly increased the density of his fork, and it snapped his finger. Of course, he'd gone through multiple incidents like this in the past, so didn't bother him much. He casually continued reading something about physics, the world around him absent from his mind.
(sorry, I had a longer post but my computer crashed.)
(It's ok))
A young woman with thick blonde hair walked into the library. She had a pair of black sunglasses on, but as she stepped into the building she took them off and placed them into her bag. She had green eyes though they didn't focus on anything. At her side was a blue merle Great Dane. He wore a harness, showing that he was a seeing eye dog. The young woman, Genesis, had ahold of the harness and walked beside the larg dog she had named, Bambi. She and the dog made their way towards the back of the library like always. She had sensed Tobias's presence, but acted as if she didn't realize he was even there. She allowed her fingers to skim of the spines of books all that were written in braille. Genesis shifted and smiled gently. "Here it is." She murmured as she grabbed a book before turning to find somewhere to sit.
Tobias hadn't noticed the young woman at first, his eyes scanning the pages of his book intently. When he finished a chapter, he took a moment to lean back and think about what he read. His eyes were first drawn to the Great Dane, then to the girl whose fingers traced the spines of various books. So she's blind, he observed, idly tapping the aluminum splint on his finger against the table. He briefly wondered if he should offer her a spot at his table. His kindness outweighed his instinct to avoid social interaction in order to keep his true nature a secret, because he never knew when he'd accidentally use his ability.
Toby cleared his throat nervously and stood up from his seat. "Um, miss, if you're looking for a seat, there are plenty over here," he said with a hushed tone, as they were in a library. He hoped she'd find her way over here easily, because he didn't have much experience with blind people. The thought made him feel like he was judging her too quickly, but he just smiled tentatively, even if she couldn't see it.
Genesis had a feigned confusion as she tried to find a table, but upon hearing the males voice she turned towards him and smiled gently. "Thank you." She said softly and with surprising ease, walked over to the table. However, she seemed to have a bit more trouble with the chair. After finding one she set her book down and also managed to sit down, Bambi sat down beside her and almost seemed more like an attack dog rather than a seeing eye dog. She gazed up at Tobias and seemed to gaze right into his eyes even though all she saw was blackness. "I'm Genesis." She introduced herself and raised a hand politely. She was expecting him to shake her hand as well. Although she seemed nice, all it was was a facade. One that she had seemed to master by now. It came second nature to her just as her ability to kill had become second nature.
Tobias paused briefly, looking into her sightless eyes. He found it unnerving that she seemed to make direct eye contact, but disregarded it when she extended her hand. "Uh, Tobias," he introduced himself, and hastily shook her hand, the splint around his finger making it slightly awkward. He returned to his seat across from her, sending a glance down to her dog who sat dutifully at her side. His eyes returned to the pages of his book, although now he had trouble reading knowing that someone else was sitting at his table. His social anxiety made him sigh inwardly. What if he screwed with the density of his book and split the table in half? Or what if he accidentally made the table weigh almost nothing, and it flew across the room? He never had these thoughts when he was simple left to himself. He continued to tap his finger splint against the table nervously without realizing it, head ducked as if he were still reading.
"Nice to meet you." She said sweetly, putting on a good act. Though she was nothing like her front act. She then drew back her hand and opened her own book. Although she couldn't see him, Genesis could almost sense his anxiety. She had been reading dutifully though stopped and sighed softly. "May I ask why you are fretting over human contact?" She asked curiously her sightless gaze never left the table though she knew sometimes her directness was a bit unnerving as well. Her dog, Bambi whined softly and shifted as he gazed at Tobias. "Hush now. No need for that." Genesis scolded before her hands searched the table for her book. Unknowingly she had pushed it away from her as she went to settle Bambi. These were one of those few times she felt completely useless.
Tobias flinched slightly at her inquiry. He hated being noticed, especially when it was because of his odd behavior. "I'm not fretting," he retorted lamely. He cast another glance to the dog at Genesis' side. Dogs were known for sensing things that people could not. What if the dog knows about what I am? he thought hastily, paranoia getting the best of him. He mentally kicked himself after the statement, running a hand over his forehead with a nervous chuckle.
Toby flipped his book closed, pushing his chair back to leave. He saw Genesis move her hands across the table in search of her book, and his immediate reaction was to nudge it in her direction. He would come to realize the mistake as a loud crack! shattered the silence of the library. Though his fingers only brushed the cover of the book for a fleeting moment, the brief contact was enough to make the pages of braille weigh as much as a semi-truck. The table cracked beneath the weight and collapsed, scattering wooden splinters across the floor.
Genesis almost laughed as he pathetically tried to convince her that he wasn't fretting. Bambi once again had whined softly and gazed at Tobias. "Bambi hush, I know." She told the dog which seemed to relax him. She could tell that Tobias was extremely tense and knew that he had a secret he probably couldn't control. She kept her sweet and innocent act up, smiling cutely, not showing him the truth of who she is. Though then again she didn't exactly know who he was either.
Her fingers grazed over the table when all of a sudden it shattered pieces of wood lodged themselves in her legs and into Bambi. Bambi yelped and was now whining in pain while Genesis hissed softly. "What happened?" She confused, she knew something had happened, though whatever it was she couldn't exactly tell. That was the issue with being blind, sometimes her set of eyes weren't that reliable. She sat there and held her legs as pain coursed through them. She wasn't use to this feeling and she didn't like it.
Horror fell across Toby's face as the table promptly shattered, causing him to leap back to avoid the shrapnel. Should I run? I don't think any number of excuses could cover this up. He stopped himself when he realized that his new acquaintance had suffered bits of wood embedding into her legs. He was overwhelmed with guilt, and he looked around uneasily. People had appeared from other parts of the library and were now surveying the scene, each person wearing an expression of confusion - the table probably looked like it had spontaneously exploded.
Tobias finally snapped himself out of his daze and hurried to Genesis' side. He didn't dare lay his hands on her in fear of causing something else to happen, and hastily began swiping shards of the table aside. "A-Are you okay?" He glanced over her legs and noticed the blood beginning to seep around the splinters sticking out of her skin. Although he was quite knowledgeable when it came to first aid, as he was constantly having to tend to injuries that he would accidentally inflict on himself, he couldn't bring himself to help her. "I'll call an ambulance for you," he offered quickly.
Genesis at first seemed unphased towards the pain, but remembered her act and let the pain sweep her away. She had counterfeit tears in her eyes and she struggled With the pain. "No I'm not okay. I am wood in my legs and I have no idea what's going on." She yelped and continued with her tears. Bambi on the other hand truly was in pin she whined and trembled which did kill Genesis to hear. "Bambi. You've gotta help him." She said suddenly.
Genesis held onto her legs tightly. Though she started to become lightheaded. Her legs were losing more blood leaving her feel faint. She held onto the chair though after a couple moments she began to sway. Someone else had called 911 by then and the last thing she heard were the faint sounds of sirens as an ambulance rushed to the rescue. Genesis had passed out, she fell from her seat and laid crumbled on the floor. Bambi was right beside her. He licked her face trying to wake her up.
