The gothic novel was invented almost single-handedly by Horace Walpole, whose The Castle of Otranto contains essentially all the elements that constitutes the genre. Walpole's novel has influenced novels, short stories, poetry, and even movies. You might be surprised at how many of those elements can be found in the book you're reading right now.

How does your book rate on the Walpole-o-Meter?
1 - 2 elements = Not a Gothic
3 - 5 elements = Wannabe Gothic
6 - 8 elements = Walpole Approved

And the elements are:

1. Setting The story takes place in an old, abandoned, decaying, ruined castle or mansion, often with secret passages, trap doors, hidden staircases. Often there are caves nearby. There is some sort of miserable weather happening.

2. Suspense There is a feeling of mystery or fear. "It is the mood that defines the Gothic...it is about the atmosphere created and the emotions evoked." The Gothic: 250 Years of Success: Your Guide to Gothic Literature and Culture by A.J. Blakemont

3. Inexplicable Events Dramatic, supernatural, amazing events occur; such as ghosts walking, inanimate objects coming to life, strange noises, bodies disappearing or doors that open themselves.

4. High, Overwrought Emotion The narration may be highly sentimental, and the characters are often overcome by anger, sorrow, surprise, and especially, terror.

5. A Woman in Distress The female character often faces events that leaves them fainting, terrified, screaming and/or crying. Emotional speeches are frequent.

6. A Powerful, Tyrannical Male An employer, lord of the manor, father, or guardian may demand the female do something intolerable.

7. A Hero The hero is handsome and adventurous, but is also dark, brooding and mysterious with a difficult or tragic childhood.

8. Vocabulary The constant use of appropriate words creates the atmosphere. Examples : diabolical, haunted, ominous, secret, agony, dreaded, despair, frantic, shrieks, terrible, wretched, alarm, shocking, anxious, rage, temper, wrath, dismal, black, and tremendous.

Leslie | 757 comments Okay, well I didn't roll, but I finished an Amanda Quick novel, With This Ring. It had almost every element of a gothic. The author did it on purpose maybe because the Heroin was a writer of gothic novels. However, our Heroin who was in fact distressed did not faint. Quick/Krentz heroins never do, however, she did shriek in order to distract the villain so the Hero could tackle him. And, of course, like most of this author's novels the powerful, tyrannical male is usually the Hero, who eventually softens. I have read this book several times, but this is the first time I really noticed and read the author's note. lol, the author's note was about a short history of gothic novels. Nifty

Rachel Bea (gekrepten) | 650 comments I am going to play from July 26th through Otober 26th*. :)

1st roll: 3, Gothic looking cover
Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt WANNA-BE GOTHIC
This book features 5 Walpole elements listed above: 1. Setting; 2. Suspense; 3. High, Overwrought Emotion; 4. A Woman in Distress; and 5. Vocabulary. I gave it a 4 star review because I really liked it and I didn't predict how it would end. Finished 8/4/2016, ****

2nd Roll: 5, which brings me to 8: A Short Story
The Vampyre; A Tale by John William Polidori WANNA-BE GOTHIC
Hmm, this one is difficult to judge. For its Walpole ratingI'll give it 3: the elements of: Suspense; High, Overwrought Emotion, and Vocabulary. I gave it a personal rating of 4 stars because I found it genuinely frightening. Finished 8/10, 2016, ****

3rd Roll: 4, which brings me to 12: A Gothic looking cover
The Anatomist's Wife (Lady Darby, #1) by Anna Lee Huber NOT A GOTHIC
While I absolutely loved this book, this does not score high on the Walpole gothic meter! I give it only 1 point, for Setting, because it takes place in an old (but functioning and in great shape) castle. The main character is very headstrong, defiant, and certainly not helpless. While there are elements of fear and terror (it is a murder mystery), it is not overwrought and there is no supernatural activity at play. The "hero" is the protagonist, Keira, who doesn't need saving by a man. Great book! Finished 8/23/16, ****

4th Roll: 4, which brings me to 16: Word in the text: faint, fainting, swoon or swooning
Uncle Silas by J. Sheridan Le Fanu WALPOLE APPROVED!
From the text: 'Has she ever committed any great crime?' I asked, feeling as if I were on the point of fainting.
Walpole rating 7: for Setting; Suspense; Inexplicable Events; High, Overwrought Emotion; A Woman in Distress; A Powerful, Tyrannical Male; Vocabulary. I LOVED THIS BOOK and so glad I finally read it after a few years of really wanting to! Finished 9/2/16; ****1/2

5th Roll: 2, which brings me to 18: Modern gothic novel (1938 - now)
Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin WALPOLE APPROVED!
Walpole Rating: 7, for: Setting; Suspense; High, Overwrought Emotion; A Woman in Distress; Powerful, Tyrannical Male (that would be Hyde, not Jekyll); Vocabulary. I LOVED this book. It was creepy, sad, thoughtful. Finished 9/5/16, *****

6th Roll: 2, which brings me to 20: Middle grade or YA.
Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake WANNA-BE GOTHIC
Walpole rating: 5, for: Setting; Suspense; Inexplicable Events; Hero; Vocabulary. This book is a young adult horror book. It was characterized as a "gothic ghost story" so that's why I picked it. It scored higher on the Walpole meter than I would have thought. It has a gothic-esque cover, with the creepy old house and a young woman hovering nearby, but it was unlike most other gothic books I read. It was adventurous, witty, and a little spooky.
Finished 9/11/16, ****

7th Roll: 4, which brings me to: 24: a mystery.
The Vanishing by Wendy Webb WALPOLE APPROVED!
Walpole rating 7: for Setting; Suspense; Inexplicable Events; High, Overwrought Emotion; A Woman in Distress; A Hero; Vocabulary. I kind of debated about "hero" but I figure the Drew character could satisfy that requirement. I absolutely loved it and could not put it down. I wanted the mystery solved, but I also wanted to stay at Havenwood! *****

8th roll: 3, which brings me to 27, word in the text - fog or foggy
The Distant Hours by Kate Morton NOT A GOTHIC
Walpole rating 3: for Setting; High, Overwrought Emotion; A Woman in Distress I really wanted to like this book and I loved how it started. Unfortunately it felt really bogged down and repetitive. I also found many of the characters to be irritating, frustrating and unlikable. I also thought there was this weird sense of abuse between the father and the daughters (not just psychological). **

9th roll:4, which brings me to 30: short story.
Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu WALPOLE APPROVED!
Walpole Rating: 6, for Setting; Suspense; Inexplicable Events; High, Overwrought Emotion; A Woman in Distress; Vocabulary. I hope this can count as a short story, even though it's a novella? It's under 100 pages... Anyway, I LOVED Carmilla. It was deliciously creepy and I'm pretty amazed that it was written and published when it was. I wish I could go back and time and read it after it was first published and feel the reaction of the world.

* lol, I thought I only had three months to do the challenge! Silly me :D

Progress: 7 out of 7

Duration : this is a six month challenge

This challenge focuses on books that are or might be traditional gothic literature. Your job is to read them and decide how they measure up on the Walpole-o-Meter.
