Hector Peniche | 9 comments In a trip to San Francisco I went to a used book store. I bought an old copy of a book and realized I had paid almost 50 dollars for it. So I wonder what is the most money you have paid for a book?

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) I've paid close to $200 (US) for a signed limited edition leather bound A4 size book, to me it was well worth it :)

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I bought a 1644 printing of a Dutch East Indian atlas that cost me 1500 Euro (about $1800) and I consider it money well spent!

Philip Athans (philathans) | 36 comments I want to say it was about $50 but can't remember.

I'm happy to say my biggest book collection is of the old Ace SF Doubles, which can generally be had for $4 or less. I did pay $20 for one of the rare Philip K. Dick ACE Doubles, and that was well worth it.

Still, I tend to be more a "buy lots of cheap books" guy than a "buy a few expensive books" guy. That might change if tonight's MegaMillions drawing goes my way!

Terri | 13 comments I paid $75 for Le Petit Robert French/French dictionary. It's an exhaustive dictionary but it's so huge I've never really used it

message 7: by Reese (new)

Reese Copeland (nonfreak) | 46 comments Nearly $80, unfortunately, it was a college text book. Constitutional Law, which was exact decisions from numerous US Supreme Court decisions. It was actually very interesting and I did keep that one.

message 8: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (herbtiff) College books aside it was a recent purchase not for myself. I bought Robert Jordan's last Wheel of Time book and it was almost $40. I purchased it for a friend and as a gift for my sister. I decided last minute to go to the book signing and needed the book to have it signed! I about croaked when I heard the total. Oh well, hopefully it brought them joy.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Well textbooks excluded, I paid 60.00 for an expensive herbal book that I found discounted

WOW! My jaw dropped after reading that. And you have me drooling, too. I am SO envious. How on earth did you find such a buy to begin with?

message 18: by Janice (new)

Janice (citereh) I paid $75.00 for 2 volumes of Little Compton Families by Benjamin Franklin Wilbour. They are on genealogy.

It was a maybe 5 or 6 years ago (or more and my time understanding is waning). I believe it was meant to be the last edition in print. My husband receives Oxford's sale flyers in the mail. OED was "on sale." Yeah for me. I love them. Definition of "love" is some 20 odd pages long. too fun.

message 20: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Best | 2 comments I know I've paid a lot for books over the years, but the one I remember best wasn't the actual price as much as the fact that I couldn't afford it. I was shopping at Costco (parents' membership), and had to be oh so careful with my tiny budget. I needed eggs, frozen burritos, top ramen...the things young people subsisted off of back then. And there was a copy of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare". It was bound in dark red leather and had gold-edged pages. I could feel his name under my fingertips as I stood and debated buying it (it was $14.99, but it might as well have been $100 to me). Buying it meant I'd have to put back some groceries. I bought it. I added more water to the ramen, divided some eggs... but my sould was fed like a Queen. I have that book on my shelf today.

Moloch | 9 comments I can't really remember but never more than 100 Euros, maybe 80 was the highest (but including shipping).

I know where you are coming from. We book buying addicts often tend to follow the wise words of Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus: “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."

message 23: by Veronika (new)

Veronika (vforveronika) I believe the highest I ever paid for a book was $20, maybe $25. I do plan on buying these really cool editions of the Hunger Games series that cost about $100 for all three books plus shipping though once I save up the money.

They are good books but not sure I would pay $100 for them

message 25: by Zouagie (new)

Zouagie | 41 comments If I remember exactly, the most expensive one I've bought was a three-part series for $70. I believe it was the start of my collection.
