Dana Burkey (danaburkey) AUTHOR QUESTIONS:

What are you currently working on?

If readers had to read just one of your books, what one would you choose?

What is your favorite character you have created?

What advice would you give you other authors out there looking to get started?

K.S. Marsden (ksmarsden) | 4 comments Hi, thanks for the questions Dana!

What are you currently working on?
There are three projects at moment.
Kristen: Witch-Hunter is a short story, looking at how Kristen found out she was a witch-hunter and how she began her fight with the Shadow Witch. It's an accompaniment of the main Witch-Hunter trilogy, and has been sent off for editing, and will soon be featured in an anthology.
James and Sophie will each be getting a novella prequel to the Witch-Hunter trilogy. I had the prequel 50% done, decided I didn't like the angle I was taking, so I'm back to scratch with that. The novellas should be published in 2016.
The Lost Soul is a YA fantasy set in Enchena. It's in the final stages of polishing and will be released at the end of August. So I'm quite excited (and really, really nervous) about this one - it's the first time I've published anything outside of the Witch-Hunter world!

If readers had to read just one of your books, what one would you choose?
Well, logically I would choose The Shadow Rises - it's the first in the Witch-Hunter trilogy, and it's free, which is always a bonus. It follows how Hunter Astley, who works for the British Malleus Maleficarum Council, uncovers the existence of a Shadow Witch; and his fight to bring them down.
But if I had to go with my heart, it's gotta be The Shadow Falls - the final part of the trilogy. The truth is uncovered, and it has an array of characters that were just so much fun to write.

What is your favorite character you have created?
That changes day to day. Out of the Witch-Hunter series, it would have to be one of two:
James - Hunter's best-friend. Amongst all these magically-charged and advanced fighters, James is just a normal guy. But he never once backs down. He's also the only person who sees past Hunter Astley's fame in the witch-hunting community, and tells him how it is.
Mel - Full name Mythanwy Elpeth Lughnasa. Mel appears in The Shadow Falls, and refuses to comply with the rules of sanity, physics, and... just plain rules. She is delightfully, and innocently odd; with the drive to help her new friends.

What advice would you give you other authors out there looking to get started?
I would say read. Lots.
It's tempting to shut yourself away, and focus on just the writing. But we need to read to inspire us.
Also, read to find out what doesn't work. What irritates you in books? Which cliches are you bored with? Break free from the character moulds.
