Searching for a forgotten book...

Okay, I posed this in another group where the goal is to find books people remember but can't name.
Years ago (I hate to think how many) I read a book about a man who, when he slept would find himself in another world where he was a sort of ape-man. These are stone age people so in short order he's head of the tribe and leading them in conquest of neighboring tribes. He's bringing new ideas in (metal smelting etc.)
As this goes on he finally encounters a more human-like tribe (Neanderthal vs. Cro-Magnon?) who keep thwarting his continued conquest.
When he's awake he talks about his experiences with a friend. In the end of the book it turns out that the friend is the one leading the human-like/Cro-Magnon tribe.
Ring any bells?
I'm looking for a book that I started once, but never finished. Unfortunately I don't recall the title or the author. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me find it from the following description, I've not managed to find it just using google.
It's a fantasy/sword&sorcery type book; there's a young apprentice farrier at a castle who ends up on some kind of quest, but the horses are a bit unusual... This world has a special kind of silver metal that resists the effects of gravity. They make horseshoes out of it and thus enable the horses to fly. I don't remember much else except that there were two princes at the castle, one was always trying to get this young apprentice into trouble and one was nice.
If anybody can tell me what book this is I'd be very grateful!
Cheers,
Jack
