Jeane (pinkbookdragon) | 323 comments What are the various meanings of the title The Blind Assassin? Which characters act as blind assassins by uncomprehendingly causing the demise of other characters?

Oh man, where to begin!

I think that the biggest one that we can all agree is Iris was the blind assassin, being blind to what was going on between Laura and evil Richard.

Yes, I agree; although by the end of the book she's the one with more knowledge than anyone else.

Laura is blind in that she lives in her own fantasy world (well, all the characters live in their own worlds, but Laura more than most.) But as to the assassin label, this applies more to the male characters - their father, Alex and Richard, who are all destructive and given to trampling the feelings of others underfoot, choosing not to see what they are doing.

The more I think about this the more complex it is. The blind assassin of the SF strand sees with his hands and ears, after all; while the dumb girl whom he rescues becomes a mouthpiece and interpreter. They aren't born blind or dumb but made that way by others, and they find ways to overcome their lack.

Hmmm, yeah that correlation is really interesting!

Cecily | 44 comments It might be quicker to list the characters who are NOT blind assassins in any sense. ;)

Maureen (maureencean) Yes, I will have to chime in with Iris as well. Sad.
Winifred, on the other hand, eyes wide open there!
