Author: Most men are crybabies when they're feeling under the weather.

I would protest but this is kind of true.

What do you think? How are you when sick? Are most guys "crybabies" when sick? Why is this? Are women tougher when sick?

message 2: by Lori (new)

Lori Oh yes, men are the WORST when they are sick, it's a topic of much conversation amongst women. When a man get a cold, the world ends and he complains and wants mommy. When a woman gets a cold, she still takes care of the kids schlepping them wherever, cooks, without a word!
There was a report a few months ago that men typically take off from work for days longer than woman when sick.

God forbid men got a period every month! But that's probably why women are tougher. And don't get me started on childbirth!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm a total wuss when I'm sick. I want chicken soup and peanut butter sandwiches brought to me on a tray, but Chris just doesn't get that. Off he goes to work, leaving me to fend for myself...

I become a day-quil and thera-flu zombie when sick. I go out in the world to save my "sick" days for mental health days.

Often when I really need a day off most of all I feel physically fine.

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I can be a bit of a whiner when I am sick but it is NOTHING compared to Brent. You'd think no one ever had a cold before.

message 6: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I have taught sick many times, but when I'm at home and I'm sick I admit I tend to wuss out. Often it's the day after I'm sick that I'm at my worst...you know, when you're completely exhausted. I have been known to disappear and sleep when I'm sick, while my wife tends to stick it out, even though I recommend she take it easy...

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I think that because women are genetically and historically the caregivers we are hard-wired to be able to push through an illness and do what needs to be done. You don't stop being a mom just because you're sick. The dishes don't wash themselves just because you're sick.

Now, when I have cramps, the pain is debilitating. I usually am curled up in the fetal position on the bathroom floor, fighting off the nausea and wishing I were a man.

Exactly, RA! The weekend after a sickness I can sleep 15 hours and still feel like dozing off at 8pm the next night.

Sweeter, he's a baby when sick. Holy.

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments I have been sick for the last two days.
God, it sucks.
I have no one to act like a baby toward, so I just drink juice in bed and read like nuts(I started and finished American Gods in two days) and sleep.

Félix (habitseven) No fun. NyQuil saved my life this week. Only thing that would help me sleep.

message 11: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments Does it worry anyone else that Larry is singing the praises of NyQuil while once again flying the Nolte avatar?;)

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeeeeeehah!

message 13: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
"flying" the avatar? heesh hee!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That is worrisome, tadpole. Larry, be careful with that stuff. I don't want to see your actual mugshot show up here.

message 15: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Flying. Yes. Don't worry, Jackie. I can quit any time I want to.

Isn't it something like 24% alcohol?

message 17: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments I think there are only two ingredients: alcohol and that green death flavored syrup...

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Sally wrote: "Isn't it something like 24% alcohol?"

That's one reason why you only take 30 ml at a time. It has other zippy stuff in it, too.

My problem with NyQuil is that I take it to sleep (like the commercial promises it will help me to do) but I wake up 2.3 hours later, thirsty and more awake than before.

message 20: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That's no good. I guess everything has different effects on different people. It works great for me when I have a head cold/virus.

message 21: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Poor Larry! I'd make you some chicken soup if you were near.

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's the thought that counts. At least I had some good Mexican food thanks to you.

message 23: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Indeed! I had a bowl of green chili and two rellenos yesterday on our way home from the aeropuerto. Muy bien!

message 24: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Muy muy!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I down so many liquids when I'm sick that it interferes with my sleep. I have to get up every couple of hours.
I hate that. : (

message 26: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
But it is good news that you are keeping the fluids pumping through the system! I bet you get over things quicker than most that way.

message 27: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Isn't just an ... um ... old wive's tale?

I won't scoot the ficus in front of you tonight, friend, I'll cover you with this nice homemade quilt instead.

message 31: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh that's so nice and warm.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments You're supposed to drink fluids to keep your mucus members moist, right? And to help expel all the excess mucus itself.
I was reading in the paper just the other day that it's good to eat spicy food, too, for that reason. So, when you're sick, put a little Tabasco in your soup. And some garlic wouldn't hurt, either.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
"mucus members"?!?!?! Is that right?

*scuttles to webmd.com*

Also, tangentially related, hot coffee and spicy food are supposed to be good things to eat in hot climates because they make you sweat and get the members flowing.

message 34: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Members? Really?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Membranes, sorry.
Hahahaha!!! I think I'm pretty tired, guys...

I'm off to bed and back to my book with that, Jacks. Thanks for the chuckles.

Feel better, Larry.

message 37: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Night all. Thanks, Sally. I do already.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Good night, Sally! Sweet dreams...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Good night, Larry. Go easy on the Nyquil, there, Train Guy.

message 40: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I will Jackie. Worry not.

message 41: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I've been a sleeping zombie for the last week because of stoopid sinus stuff, and normally I push through it all but can't seem to this time. Now I find out it's gone to my teeth and I have to have a root canal done.

This is where I become a big whiney baby, when dentists are involved. They scare me silly. Eek.

Nyquil is definitely not an option for me, it gives me heart palps & shortness of breath, and makes me sleep for days. That stuff is eee-vil, I tell ya.

message 42: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) The last time I was sick I talked my parents into watching Belle for the weekend and drifted in and slept for most of two days, occasionally getting up long enough to watch an episode or two of Little Britain.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments An update - Robby (I'm sure the meds helped) and Mom slept GREAT last night... we went to bed at 8ish and slept in until 6:15. :) He seems like his old self again, already.

message 45: by RandomAnthony (last edited Mar 20, 2009 08:02AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Glad to hear it, Heiders...

Ok, weird question. Does anyone here have lice paranoia? Or know someone who does? I swear, my family has never had lice, but because my wife and I both work in schools she is TOTALLY PARANOID about lice. Every now and then, when lice rumors go around her school, she buys weird chemical shampoo, attacks our children with it, then washes every single sheet/pillowcase in the house.

message 46: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments (I meant to post all that in the Twitter for TC thread, RA).

I babysit the munchkin regularly and last fall, she got a case of lice from one of the kids in her class (whose rude parents kept sending her back to school despite warnings... and caused an outbreak all over the school).

Apparently it's not like the lice problems that went around when we were kids (I had to shampoo once when a note was sent home with all the parents, but I've never had it). Her mother said the doctor told her today's lice is mutant-gened and will survive most of the stuff that we used when we were kids... and now they have to use something that is considerably more toxic to get rid of it...because it's hard to kill/destroy. THAT scares me.

Needless to say, I didn't have to babysit for the 3 weeks that they were treating The Munchkin. It sure did make me itchy to be around her, though. I'm still reticent to go near her head or to set my head back on any of their furniture when I babysit.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments If someone mentions lice, I get paranoid. My mother works in a school where there are occasional outbreaks, and I hate hearing about it, even from afar.
There's apparently an Israeli invention called a RobiCombi or something like that which can get rid of them effectively.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Heidi, I feel like Robbie updates belong in every thread. Don't discriminate.

Lice. I don't know how I feel about lice. They creep me out, sure. But I think you have to be very neglegent about cleaning your hair for a while to develop an infestation. I mean, those suckers have to loll about long enough to meet, mate, settle down, lay eggs, tend eggs, give birth, etc. That doesn't happen instantly!

Lice love!

message 49: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) You can get them from someone else instantly.

message 50: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
sure, "get" them, but they can be brushed off if they don't have time to lay eggs.

I really ought to check wikipedia on this, I actually know nothing, just what we told each other at supercuts.
