Is it me or is this book a bit similar to The Hunger Games?

there are a few similarities but the stories are quite different since it's a longer progression to understand what they are actually being trained to do in The Testing v. what the overall goal is in THG.

really the biggest similarity is that in the testing, it's survival of the fittest during their first challenge just like it is in the games in THG

I think it's similar, but I think the biggest difference is that most of the students in the testing do not realize what they are getting themselves into. They all want to be selected for testing and university, but in the hunger games the entire world is aware of the horrors of the capital and they dread being selected. I think putting people (especially young adults) in a life or death situation in any book is going to result in the same type of situations and responses from characters because you will always fight for your life when required to do so. I think the prize in the testing is different than in the Hunger Games as well, and most people know that they will not survive the Hunger Games while many of the testing students expect to have bright futures once they pass.

I agree.

I noticed a lot of similarities in both books. The use of children, the fact that Cia's territory had caught on and kept the children from going was a form of rebellion and clear indication that they suspected "something" was going on. The all-powerful central government pulling resources (most promising young people) from the satellite territories, a government with a possibly good/possibly bad leader. I read the entire trilogy so I'm talking of that and not just Testing.

Very similar...Hunger Games was better. The bad guys had more logic and the characters seemed more consistent.

What Christopher said. It's the same exact story as the Hunger Games only lamer.

I actually loved The Testing. Yes its similar to THG. Its a YA book with a dystopian setting. Things are bound to end up similar. I think the books stands on its own though.
My personal favourite thing was that I liked the possibility of everyone in the book thinking that University testing was something they should all strive towards and want like no tomorrow, only to get it and have the threat of what failing means for it hanging over their heads. I personally thought it was a smart way to bring light to societies current situation regarding post secondary education. People are taught from a young age that Post secondary is something you WANT and NEED and sadly for many things you do need it. However some people just aren't for post secondary school and theres nothing wrong with that. Sometimes the pressure of getting into post secondary and doing well on it hangs over peoples heads like a mental death threat.
Of course this is all my personal opinion and Im probably over thinking it so feel free to ignore my post :)

I thought it was really too much like a hybrid of THG and The Maze Runner series. I won't be reading the sequel.

Your loss. This trilogy is way better than both of those books combined AND is not like them at all really besides the fact that it is a dystopian book so it'll have similar elements.

No need to be salty, everyone has different opinions and that's what makes this world great.

I've always thought this kinda felt like a cross between The Hunger Games and the Uglies trilogy.
