Ctgt | 765 comments Anyone going to Scares That Cares convention in Williamsburg VA July 24th-26th? I was checking out the list of authors and it looks fantastic, including several HA members.

Here's a link to the schedule of authors STC authors list.

The end of July is pretty tight for me but I'm hoping to squeeze this in to the schedule, so many great names.

Pamela | 212 comments I am an author that will be there, doing a reading and a panel. I also will be manning the Horror Writers Association Virginia chapter's table Friday night, so come on by and say hello.

Jonathan Janz (jonathanjanz) | 978 comments Just a reminder:

Scares That Care 3 is coming in July 2016. It is the best convention in the world. The aura is one of fun, kindness, and passion for the genre. If you find yourself within ten hours of Williamsburg next July, please go. Legendary horror writer Brian Keene creates the author programming, and the past two years have included folks like Jack Ketchum, F. Paul Wilson, Edward Lee, Jeff Strand, Tom Monteleone, Ron Malfi, and others.

In short, you should go. It's awesome.

Don't make me show up on your doorstep.

Bill (shiftyj1) | 4891 comments I'm trying to convince my wife this would be a good idea , but coming out from California it is going to be a bit of a tough sell. Not to mention the fact that she doesn't get my whole "book hoarding" thang. Who doesn't like piles of books strewn about the house? Easy answer...my wife ;) I will have to keep working on her. Maybe I can break her down by July.

Ctgt | 765 comments I was so disappointed when I couldn't make the convention this past summer but I'm planning on being there next year.

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments I work every other weekend, so getting away to cons can be problematic, and is complicated firther by how my wife's work schedule conflicts with my own. But she'll be retiring next year, so things should open up soon for us.

Dude, traveling that far would earn you some kind of medal. I forgot you were in California.

Well, I'll just say this: I'd love to meet you, and it would be awesome if you could come to STC, but if you don't you have a good excuse, and we'll hang out some other time, preferably sooner rather than later. :-)

I really hope you go, Ctgt! Not to be creepy, but how far do you have to travel?

Ah, that'll be cool. When the wife retires, I'll expect you to be at all the cons I attend. :-)

Twenty hours?! Yikes! Okay, you get a pass too, Robert. But it'd still be cool to meet you one of these days.

Ctgt | 765 comments I'm in Maryland so it wouldn't be a long trip for me...of course I would still have to get past both beltways which can be a nightmare.

I can't speak to that, but I will say that traveling to and from Virginia Beach from Williamsburg inspired a future scene from a horror novel.

*thinks of tunnel and shivers*

I just need you to get out San Francisco way! Problem solved :)

I still am going to try and make it to STC. Would be pretty awesome and I'm sure well worth the trip.

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments The wife and I were in SF in 2014. Stayed for about a week and a half at the Cornell. Combination vacation and research trip for The Secret Room. Great trip. Hope to make it back one day.

message 19: by Bill (new)

Bill (shiftyj1) | 4891 comments I hear the Cornell is a nice hotel. I've never stayed there because I don't stay over in the city too often since I live so close.

message 20: by Walter (last edited Oct 25, 2015 10:29PM) (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments We managed to slide into a great deal there, Bill. The Cornell has a French restaurant in the basement, the Jeanne D' Arc. December through February they offer a package where if you stay a week or longer you get a complimentary breakfast every morning and a complimentary dinner Tuesday-Friday evenings. However, the website didn't have any restrictions listed when we made our reservations, so we got that same deal while we were there from the end of July through the first week of August.

What part of SF do you live in? We didn't get to too many neighborhoods, but we did manage to visit a few, including the Mission District where we met up with the Sword & Laser folks here on Goodreads for their first monthly meeting over at Borderlands.

Definitely agree, Jonathan! I have flown to WHC before, but it's rare, so maybe some year I can fly there instead. I usually only do cons within driving distance (of Dallas). I'm curious to see how the splitting of WHC from the Stokers and the creation of the new StokerCon is going to go. Seems like it might end up dividing the crowd and lessening both of them, but who knows.

If you happen to be anywhere near here, let me know!

I live in Livermore, which is about 40 minutes outside of SF. Very cool you got to Borderlands. Best book store around and they do some occasional authors events. I got to hang out with Scott Sigler when he was still living in SF. John Shirley hangs out in the coffee shop too.

Will do, Robert! The splitting of those cons will definitely be interesting to watch. I'd love to go to one, but with my three younger kids, it might be unfeasible, at least for this year. One of these days! :-)

Hunter Shea | 55 comments I've signed my appearance contract and made my hotel reservation. I can't believe the hotel with the con is already sold out. Just 2 years ago, there was hardly anyone there. So glad to see it's growing so fast. And always filled with so many readers. My favorite con of the year by far. Hope to see you all there. I do keep cold beer under my table for sharing. ;)
