Answer ONE of the following:
-What motivates your character?
-What is the most important conflict in your text?

You must use at least ONE appositive phrase in your response.

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Ilijah A | 40 comments In my book, The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R Tolken, a conflict in my book is that Frodo Baggins, a nobel hobbit, must return the ring to Mordor. A Creature named Smegol wants the ring. Frodo travels this journey with another hobbit named Sam. The journey will be rough and painful. “Fear nothing! Have peace until the morning! Heed no nightly noises!” This quote shows that there is nothing to fear.

Andy Chen | 44 comments In Stephanie S. Tolan's fictional novel, Surviving the Applewhites, what motivates one of the protagonists, Jake, is when being talented and auditioning for a role in a play. Jake, a misbehaving, talented boy, was known to have burn down his former school and can only attend to one last school, which is the Applewhites, where every students are filled with talents. Talent motivates Jake because it gets him hyped and when the school announced a tryout in having a role in a play, he immediately signed up to get the part. Jake stated,"Man, am I going to take the big role of the play! I know my talents! I know I'm gonna get the part!" This quote shows this is what motivates Jake because he does have talent, but he is a trouble maker. However, he believes his success are at a high level and being in this school may fit his role as a student. Therefore, this is what motivates Jake.

Zoe | 25 comments In the nonfiction novel The Kingdom of Rarities by Eric Dinerstein, the most important conflict in the text is how rare some of the animals are in the world. In the book, Eric decides to travel to different continents to try and study some of the rare animals. However, some of the animals are very hard to find because they are endangered and there are not many of them in the wild. Eric is also trying to figure out why some animals are more rare than others, and why hunters are hunting animals even though they are endangered. Eric stated, "The most dramatic change happening today that is pushing already uncommon species toward even greater rarity is the conversion of rain forests and natural savannas into commodities production for industrialized agriculture"(151). This quote proves that the most important conflict is how already endangered animals are becoming harder and harder to find, because cutting down forests is bad for the animals that live there.

Sydney Mok (SydneyMok) | 43 comments In my book Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, the most important conflict to my protagonist's parents is that since Grace (protagonist) almost got killed by wolves when she was younger and they are afraid something might happen to her again after someone got killed by wolves near by. Grace loves wolves though. This caused her think a lot about the wolves especially the wolf with the yellow eyes. Grace thinks about the wolves a lot and how when she was attacked, she didn't even try to get away. The yellow eyed wolf is actually a werewolf and Grace doesn't know that. She is always thinking about that wolf and she loves watching them." I could have screamed, but I didn't. I could've have fought, but I didn't. I just lay there and let it happen, watching the winter sky go gray above me: (1). This quote shows that even though she was being attacked she didn't do anything. Later on in the book, Grace shows her inside thoughts. She likes wolves and always can't wait to see them. She tries and memorize the wolves that are around her area. The bad thing though is that since she experienced such a bad thing with wolves, her parents are worried for her and think that something might happen to her again.

Kenjo | 41 comments In Larry Bird and Magic Johnson's non fiction biography, When the Game Was Ours, what motivated both authors was the rivalry between them. The Larry and Magic rivalry was considered one of the most historic rivalries in the NBA. Not only did it exist in the NBA, the competition between them was also going on in college. Bird who grew up in Indiana, attended Indiana State while Magic, who was known for his big smile and cheerful attitude, attended Michigan State. Both players were amazing and had a significant amount of talent. Larry, after watching Magic replace Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stated, "Although I was in awe watching that game, a part of me was also feeling jealous of his success." This quote shows evidence of what motivated Bird to work harder against Magic and others in the NBA. Seeing Bird trying to rise above him, Magic also took on the challenge which eventually become a friendly rivalry between the two. Therefore, the competition between Bird and Magic is what motivated them to work harder and succeed.

The falcons didn't want to fight but they had no choice because the avians won't rest until they get their fight. So the Falcons decided to fight the avians, but the protagonist got to close to their fight. The protagonist states, "I got to escape; But everywhere I go, it's the Falcon and Avians fighting in front of me." This quote shows how scared he is.

Wesley | 50 comments In J.K. Rowling's Fantasy novel, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the most important conflict was Sirius, Harry's godfather, dying. After finishing this novel I am happy I read this, this book is amazing. Another war will happen. Voldemort, the main antagonist in this series has been awaken and is trying to end the good-wizards. He is the one who gave Harry his scar and killed his parents. Harry has this visions that Sirius has just been attacked and goes to the location. He finds out he was actually safe. Harry and his friends are attacked by death eater, Voldemort's followers, and Harry barley makes it when Albus Dumbledore comes with the people from the Order of the Phoenix, groups made to rebel against Voldemort. But Sirius is killed by his cousin. He states “SIRIUS!” Harry yelled. “SIRIUS!”(806) This quote happened when Sirius dies. Sirius had a great impact in his life during the 3rd book. Knowing that the Dursley wasn’t his only family, he had Sirius. So after He died, Harry was devastated. He didn’t have another wizard family member. Therefore, the important conflict was that Sirius died.

Bryan | 41 comments In my realistic fiction book, Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell, one conflict that Black Beauty went through was that he was being sent away to live a hard and cruel new life. Black Beauty was once a joyful, happy and a handsome horse who also had a strong spirit, that is until his owner had sold him, and now Black beauty goes from a life of comfort and kindness, to a life that's filled with hard labor and cruelty. "When his owners are forced to sell him, Black beauty goes from a life of comfort and kindness to one of labor and cruelty." This shows that when Black beauty was send away it was hard for him to live a life filled with nothing but greaf.
