Candy Greenway Does anyone remember reading a short story about a man in a restaurant that is not very attractive. The waitress treats him with great kindness, and we learn that they are actually married?

I'm thinking it might be a Raymond Carver story I read years ago.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Candy G.

Tall There is a Raymond Carver story called, "They're Not Your Husband," that sounds like it might be the one you're thinking of.

Candy Greenway OK, Thanks! I cannot think of another story by any other author.

Have you read "See Now Then" by Jamaica Kincaid? She actually has a scene in her novel that includes this restaurant event. If you have read it, let me know if you think she might have unconsciously used someone else's writing.

Tall That's strange! No, I haven't read that one. I wonder sometimes how often other authors' works creep into a writer's work.

Candy Greenway So do I. I had never read anything by Jamaica. I really enjoyed her latest book, "See Now Then". She tackles some difficult childhood issues with great ease. I would recommend it.

Tall Thanks. I've never read any of her books, either.
