This week's read, #2 on the list, Maeve Binchy's last book, A Week in Winter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307...

Celine (celinefrazier) Awesome! I love Maeve Binchy!

I haven't read any of her books in a long time, so looking forward to it myself.

Stephanie | 10 comments This book looks great. I've never read any of her books so I'm looking forward to it. Any good deals out there yet? It is 12.99 on amazon

Rebecca (purplerrr) | 76 comments LOVE this book. But then I buy every Maeve Binchy. Bought this book last week when I was at Costco and stayed up reading until 3 AM then had to sleep, then up at 9AM and finished reading at noon. Such a satisfying read. It has all the wonderful things I like in a MB book. An interesting main character and each chapter from a different POV character. The inkeeper, the juvie who works for her, the folks who are visiting her inn during its opening week - I enjoyed reading them all (even the kill-joy former headmistress) and I LOVED how she seeded in characters and places from previous novels. All in all a very satisfying read and a very good last read from Maeve. Brava!

I am having the same issue, realizing that the best seller group is expensive! lol

There's a downside to every worthy project!

I am intrigued by Binchy now, so maybe not all is lost. I hope it is not out of line to ask the group which book might serve as a good introduction (if not this one)? Ive put it on my to-read shelf and may swoop around back to it... I am just too obsessed with that bizarre Scientology book at the moment! lol (edit: and I don't mean Dianetics haha)

Are you talking about the new one that 'exposes' Scientology? It looks interesting.

It's really good. As is INSIDE SCIENTOLOGY, that came out last year.

I think it's newish, yes. Going Clear is the title. I would say it is exposing things to say the least! :) It is written in a competent journalistic fashion, the reader gets to impose judgement. It's fascinating. So sorry to derail everyone!

Thanks. I got a sample on my Nook.

Ashley (writingbookscoffee) Inside Scientology was great! I'm on the hold list for Going Clear and Beyond Belief by Jenna Miscavige Hill.

Cherylanne | 61 comments One reason I joined this group was to add variety to my regular reading. Few of these authors I typically buy and its always good to revisit why we make the choices we make. Both Binchy and Sparks are wildly popular, auto-buy authors for millions of readers. I'm happy for this folks, but for me....oh my goodness! I can't tell which author I hated more. Sparks wrote briskly, modern, ready to be a movie with some sneaky stupidity at the end. Binchy writes wisps of stories. At least these authors are not as heavy or pretenious as Oprah's choices. I appreciate the care that went into their selection. But--at the end of the year--I will run back to my genre novels with a certain secure smile. xxoocf

I hear you Cherylanne, but there's also great books I might not have read. All part of the experiment!

Celine (celinefrazier) I've read one of Maeve Binchy's book before and found the first try difficult to the point where I had to put the book down. Eventually I picked it up and tried again and for whatever reason, I found myself not only interested in the book but in love with the writing style and how the story was told through different characters, all of whom were connected in some way.

With this book, A Week in Winter, I did not have this same difficulty. I liked it from the start but I don't think there was anyone character I liked best. Although I'm mighty impressed that Chicky was able to keep up the ruse for so long... I would have caved long before! Thinking back on it though, the chapter on the principal was my least favourite (nasty woman).

I will be sure to pick up Maeve's other books when I cross them next.

Kat (goodreadscomkat) | 7 comments Haven't read anything by her in a long time hope she is just as good as always. Kat

Lynne (lynne_frappier) | 33 comments I loved "A Week in Winter" - I felt like I was in my grandmother's living room, chatting with my favourite person in the world and getting a great big hug (Binchy books always remind me of my grandmother since she introduced me to "The Glass Lake"). I hadn't read a Binchy book in ages and it was just as I remembered - interweaving characters and stories that make me wish I lived in a quaint Irish village. I'm so glad I picked it up - it felt like coming home.

Trudy (goodreadscomtrudyspages) I want to visit Stone House!(smiles). I'm at about 50%. Sweet read.

Rebecca (purplerrr) | 76 comments @Lynne - So agree with you. Maeve Binchy is coming home. So glad we had this final book to add to the collection!

Jacquelyn (jsglow) I am at 70% on my Kindle copy from the library (which finally came in). This is very easy to read & most of the characters are interesting but I keep waiting for everything/everyone to tie together at some point (other than their connection to the house). So far, this book just seems like a collection of short stories. I'll probably continue & finish it but so far it's kinda *meh* for me.

Jacquelyn (jsglow) Ok, I finished it. It was a nice, pleasant read that left me w/ a little smile. Stone House does sound like a magical place.

Ashley (writingbookscoffee) I finally just finished this! It took me a few weeks though, because even though I liked it I think there were some chapters I liked more than others. Some dragged on. Overall I'm glad she ended on the chapter about Freda.

Chris Evans (chrise_tx) | 14 comments Love this book! I have red Binchy before and was not overly enchanted. I was testing out ebooks from the library and this one was available. For my 2nd library ebook - this was a great read!

I have recommended this book to many. I love stories with many characters whose lives intersect and how they all fit together. All these characters end up in the same place and each seems to have a connection to each other in a way no one knew they needed.

I love that there were happy and not so happy stories, made everything seem more real. While I am sure no one liked the principal, she made the story more real. It was not magic for everyone!

Jan (janarzooman) | 31 comments It's slow going so far. Maybe Binchy didn't have enough time to really finish her last book. I'm not getting into it like I have some of her other books. Characters and motivations aren't ringing true to me. We'll see (I hate giving up on a book, so I'll keep going).

Shannon Mcmullen i enjoyed this book and learning about all the characters and hearing some from ither books.

alisonwonderland (Alison) | 65 comments I finally read this one from the 2013 group list! I found it quite delightful!
