I recently got the "Dresden Files" from the library on DVD. I love Jim Butchers books about private eye/wizard Harry Dresden, so I was hoping for an excelent adaptation by the Sci-Fi channel. Alas, and alack, I was grieviously disappointed yet again, by some wrong thinking hack who thought he knows Harry better than the loyal reader.

Now, I will say the show was very good, and I will concede a that a few of the changes were needed for the series, such as Harry driving a Jeep instead of a VW Bug as VW may not have given permission to use their vehicle, and making Bob into a non-corporeal, visual representation, vs. a skull with glowing eyes. But, what I am unable to forgive is the lack of Mister his cat, completely changing names and histories of crucial characters, such as Murphy's first name being changed to Connie instead of Karin.

Maybe I expect too much, and this is like our previous dicussion regarding movie adapatations of our favorite books. Maybe Hollywood should just stick to (LOL) original ideas instead of ripping off our fave books.

Paul (merman1967) | 113 comments Hollywood? Original ideas? ROFLMMFAO That is FUNNY! Seriously, though, I try not to read a book that is going to be a movie until after I see it, that way I am not disappointed. The lack of ability to translate verbatim is one of the reasons that Anne McCaffrey has not allowed my dream of a Drangonriders of Pern movie to be made. :(

I have to update this with the discovery of HBO's adadaptation of the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. It was pretty decent. With a few small exceptions (VERY minor) to the casting, I felt all the characters were cast dead on (ex-cuse my partial pun). I did, however, take exception to the way they chose to move the story line along. I have read all the books, and I do not recall things going the way they had them go, in any of the books. That said, the way it went was kept within the confines of her world. I am not a prude, but I did not care for the use of the f-word or the prolifferation of it, as Charlaine does not use a lot of swearing in her books. (I know that some of my friends who know me off-site know that I do use that word, but not as if it is going extinct.) I also did not care for the way that the story line was turned into a semi-porno either. Yes, there are sex scenes in the books, but not that graphic not with those characters....

O.K., that all said, will I watch the new season when it comes out on DVD, most likely. For the most part it is well done, and I would like to see where they take it from here.

Heather Thomas (5peasinapod) | 20 comments I agree Kim, True Blood does boarderline on soft core porn. I was a bit disappointed at first with the liberties they took with the story lines and how they adapted some things (Tara's character, her back story, her relationship with Sam...I was secretely hoping that Sookie would hook up with him, and what a creep her brother is...with the whole kidnapping thing).

But if you look at it as it is based from the series it makes it more palatable. Although I must say that I appreciate that they show both male/female anatomy pretty equally. I hate it when shows only focus on boobs!

I also think that each book will be a season. jmho

I agree that seeing only boobs all the time (must be why television is called "the boob tube") gets old pretty quick. I did, however, feel that this was done better than the Dresden files, where they even changed the name of one of the characters (what's up with that?!) and I felt that chemistry was lacking. Something I did not feel with the Trueblood cast.

By the way, I'm not up on chat speak or texting short hand (hence the request not to use it here in the forums incase others aren't either) so what does "jmho" mean?

Heather Thomas (5peasinapod) | 20 comments Oh I'm sorry. I didn't see the request. I'll behave. jmho = just my humble opinion :)

I do like the casting too though!

Oh, yes. Do read the books. They are good, lite to start, but as the series goes on, they become more involved.
