Reread Adam’s speech about what it is to be human (p. 100). What is the essence of his argument? What might you add to his argument, or how might you define it differently?

This part can really get you thinking and I suppose it can also come down to your religious beliefs. There was a lot of talk about evolution. Art spoke about evolution in 4 different parts. And then of course there was the talk about a soul. If there really is one or if this is just the human race trying to have some sort of immortality. The book also points out how now people are defined in classes whether we want to be or not.

And then it talks about whether or not we should have empathy. Could you shoot someone coming to the island just because they MAY have the plague?

One of my more favorite quotes from the book
“The founders of The Republic sought to deny the individual, and in doing so they ignored a simple truth.” She continues, “The only thing binding individuals together is ideas. Ideas mutate, and spread: they change their hosts as much as their hosts change them.”
