Book Buying Addicts Anonymous

Today i went to target to buys eggs and ended up with Passions Unleashed and no eggs. Then I came home got on the comp and found I had won two bids on ebay for five Keri Arthur books(8.00 dollars total) and three Linda Webber books(4.00 total) and now I'm currently bidding on six other lot of books.

Today I went out with some friend and I couldn't help it >.< I bought 2 books, despite the fact that I already have 10 books to read at home.
I can't pass in front of a book shop and not buy at least one book.
I bought Fall on your Knees(Ann-Marie MacDonald) and Jude the Obscure ( Thomas Hardy).

It doesn't matter how many times you tell yourself that you really can't afford any more new books right now, or how many times you say I am going to go the book store and just get that one book, it just doesn't happen! I actually went to Barnes and Noble today too. I was planning on buying The Book Thief. I promised myself ten times that was going to be the only book that I bought today. Well.....I didn't know that the new Riley Jensen book was out! So, I now have Deadly Desire sitting on my nightstand!
I do the same thing with audiobooks! I probably have 15 books sitting on my ipod, waiting for me to listen to them. And yet, earlier I was looking on audible.com and just about bought a couple more!
People that don't love reading just don't understand it! The other day, my mom was on my case about getting rid of some of my books. I live in a pretty small place, so I don't have a lot of room for bookshelves. Basically, I have 2 book shelves, completely stuffed with books. I have under the bed containers filled completely with books. Half of the shelves in my linen closet were turned into books shelves and I still have several boxes in my storage. Well, I guess that my mom read some article somewhere stating that if you don't have the bookshelf space for your books, then you have too many. It went on to say that you should never use space under your bed, in closets, in the corner of a room, etc to store books. That's just clutter and you have to get rid of it. I just about died laughing when my mom suggested that I get rid of most of my books so that I just had the 2 bookshelves filled. I really think that I would get rid of my bed, buy more bookshelves and sleep on the couch before I would willingly get rid of 2/3rds of my books!

Last week I went to Target for sweat socks and I purchased Zen and the Art of Vampires. Today I went to Borders with the intention of purchasing Deadly Desires well I did not want to book to be lonely in the bag so I brought Blood Magic too.
Oh and did I mention that I purchased like 4 books on amazon, but it is on sale ( I love the 4 for 3 sale).
Books, shoes and purses are my weakness.

Now what are these 4 for 3 sales at amazon? My aunt just gave me a $20 gift card for them, but I honestly don't buy books too often from them. Usually stick with Borders and B&N.

I noticed that it seems to be all of the books in a series except the most recent. For example if you wanted to buy the midnight breed series you could buy the first four under this promotion but the most recent Veil of Midnight would not be available. I love it I have gotten all of the books to a few series I wanted to own this way. Happy Shopping

I think I might be in denial. I didn't really think I was a book buying addict, I'm pretty good about getting my books from the library.
And then I started reading this thread and all of those stories sound so familiar. So I guess it's time to say...
I'm Nichole and I'm a book buying addict.
Kelley Anne-
If we'ere not supposed to be storing books under the bed than I am definitely in trouble.

- My bookshelf is currently packed completely. Not only do I have 3 book cases. But I've begun stacking books on top of other books. Now there's no more room. But under the bed, that's a good place as well. haha. What's a girl to do?
Kathy - I bought those lovely two books today, and yet I have 2 books to read that are mine... and about 6 or 7 that are from the library sitting here. What can I say, I like choices.

I went to Ikea yesterday to get a new bookshelf as my husband informed me that our current one would no longer hold anymore of my books. And well, a new bookshelf demands a new book, so a quick stop in Borders resulted in The Gargoyle, which I've heard great things about. This wouldn't be a problem, except that I often buy several books in a week and according to my GR list, that now makes 110 books that are sitting in my lovely new bookshelf that I haven't actually gotten around to reading yet. Yep, definitely an addict.

Even though I buy less. The fact I have like 400 books and I am STILL buying is enough said. Yall are too much, lol. I love the stories you shared. I wouldn't give up my books just throw away other stuff to make more room.

so pretty :)

I like to "convince" my daughter that she wants to go to the mall to ride the carousel, when really I use the trip to go to the Border's. My daughter's so used to it that when we enter the mall she automatically turns in the direction to go to the bookstore. I can count on one hand the number of times I've left without buying more than one book.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely check these out! And I definitely want a room that is "almost" solid bookcases filled with all my favorite books.

I am looking forward to the next big library sale! The paperbacks are always the first to go so I plan to be ready!

Anne - My books that are under my bed don't ever get dirty, but I don't have shelves. I bought rubbermaid under the bed boxes. I've got a queen size bed, so I can fit 3 of those on each side of the bed. Lots of room for books!

I buy books even though I have books already that I havent read piling upon my bookshelf...
I have more unread books on my bookshelves then I do read books! lol

LOL That's the magic line for me. I only track my PNR/UF books on goodreads, but my read list is currently only winning out by 5 books. Must get reading and must stop buying. ;P
Hi I'm Moss and I'm a book buying addict. Also, I think this is my first post here so hello all.
I don't go to bookstores all that much because the baby isn't all that tolerant of them, but buying books online has become so (scarily!) easy that my addiction is very easy to maintain.
I have very erratic book buying habits, like buying a book in the middle of a series because I can't get hold of it at the library. I'm trying to stop, and become more streamlined with my purchasing power but have very little patience so I have doubts it's going to work out. Ah well.
Good to know there are fellow addicts out there. What's the 12-step program to getting over it?

I have at least 50 books on my "to be read" pile but I'm still buying more. I decided to only buy "essential books" this year, yeah that's working well! LOL!
I have diabetes and before I got my insulin pump I didn't eat chocolate bars but I really wanted them., so i used to buy them anyway and then give them to my husband. Last Saturday I was in town and went into the discount bookshop. There was a book I really wanted so I bought it and gave it to my husband! I'll probably get to read it at some point anyway. And because it was 3 for £5 I bought 2 for myself, can't pass up an offer like that!

It's so nice to know I am not alone.
I just recently bought four new Billy bookcases from IKEA to add to my current 12, yes 12, so that I would have room to expand my growing library of 3000+ books. And I have another 300 some books packed in boxes in the closet.
I'm not so bad with visiting the bookstores and buying new books, I usually keep to my shopping list. That is, usually. Where I am trouble is used book sales. I just can't seem to pass a library without going in to see if they have any used books for sale. Even worse, I am a public librarian and one of my duties is withdrawals. I get first dibs on all the books I withdraw, and I just can't resist. Talk about enabling an addiction, I'm tempted to tell my boss I just can't do it anymore, it's too darn expensive! It seems like so much of my paycheck keeps going right back to the library. lol. I'm so hooked on used book sales that I've been checking off the days until Chicago's Printer's Row Book Fair on June 6 ever since the one last year ended.
My big problem is I am not just a reader, I like to collect. I have so many books I have never read but I bought at used book sales just because I wanted to have them in my collection. Lots of nonfiction as well as classics and great mystery authors like Agatha Christie, P. D. James, etc.
I wonder if maybe I shouldn't live by Desiderus Erasmus's quote: "When I have money, I buy books. If I have any left over, then I buy food and clothing." Anyone know where the nearest Bibliophiles Anonymous is? :-)

Actually seeing my TBR pile on GR is keeping me from going ape$hit and buying like mad. I want to be able to see my read pile higher than my TBR pile. Then I can justify buying more books. But it works out just fine adding to my virtual shelves. I can see browse them and see the books I will read. Someday.

I am exactly that way!! If I have money, I usually head to the bookstore first and then I worry about how to buy other things like food lol.
Whether or not that's a good thing is another question haha.
IKEA shelves ::Sigh:: and here I thought that I was some weirdo with an obsession with book shelves. At least I'm in good company since it seems everyone else also as an IKEA fetish lol.

OMG Jael. I don't think I have ever had that happen to me. I went to B n N with the intention of just pre-ordering a book and walked out with 4 new books, lol. I don't think I'll even start with the bidding sites. It is hard enough not purchasing credits when a long waited WishLIst book pops up.

I'm an addict... =(

Moss - I think that we are all in WAY too deep to even be able to figure out a 12 step program. lol
The times that I just have to laugh at myself are when I become so impatient that I can't wait for a book. Like I could get a particular book through the library, but I have to wait 2 or 3 days, so instead I go buy it! I did that yesterday with the first Lara Adrian, Midnight Breed book. Now I'm debating if I should get the rest of them on the 3 for 4 sale on Amazon or if I can wait long enough for them to be shipped!

I just came home from work where I spent most of the day doing the withdrawals of the weeding we are doing at our library of books that just aren't getting checked out, so we can make more room for those that are. In any case, I withdrew about 125 books today, and came home with TWENTY-EIGHT of them! lol
I just couldn't let these books go to the trash. Fantasy like Harry Turtledove and Mercedes Lackey, Westerns like Dana Fuller Ross and Zane Grey. I don't know if I'll ever get to reading all of them, but I just like having them. I'm the definition of bibliophile, I love to read and collect books.
Well, if I have to be addicted to something, what could be better than books? :-)
Hi. My name's Lori and I'm a book buying addict.
And I'm with Joseph. I don't just like to read. I like to collect. And I have collector's OCD, so if I like one book from a series and want to keep it then I have to keep all of the books from the series. Same with authors. I have certain authors that I have to collect. I read this one great book by a guy named Murikami. I wanted to keep it and I started buying all of his other books and keeping them. I don't think any of them were even close to as good as the first one I read of his, but I cant stop collecting them. Worse yet, I don't use the library. I want to keep my books or at least have the option of keeping them. I just love the look of them all lined up on a shelf.

I have so many books on my own-and-TBR pile that they might as well count as wall insulation (for as high as I have them stacked along my wall!) Think I could get an energy-efficiency discount for that?
No matter how many books I own, I've still bought more each week at the store. Plus I intend to buy more online as soon as I post this.
Honestly, you know you're an addict when you find yourself shipping orders to work so your family doesn't know how much you order. 'Cause that way, you can sneak 'em in a paperback at a time! Sad, but true.

@Kenjii OMG ebay is fantastic pp hardly bid on the books and u get series for chea I just won Undone by Caine for a 1.99 I'm loving it

And the lousy or great thing about it, depending on how you look at it, is my job is enabling my addiction. We just started weeding mysteries at the library where I work. If that hadn't happened, I never would have started on the five Roosevelt's I just brought home, along with the 15 other mysteries I got.
Lori, just curious, do you favor paperbacks or hardcovers to complete a collection, or doesn't it matter? I find I try and aim for paperbacks since they tend to be cheaper, either used or new, but if I already have the paperbacks, I might buy the hardcover too if I can find it for a cheap enough price. They do look so nice lined up on the shelf. I think you might be right, we probably do have collector's OCD. :-)

Although not directed at me, as far as hardcover v paperback, for me it depends on the book and author. For instance, I made a point of collecting Anne Rice and Stephen King books in hardcover. Also, if I get one book of a series in a particular form, then I have to get the rest of the series in the same manner.

OMG!!! I do the same exact thing! I thought I was just weird. Every time I had a new bag from Barnes and Noble my parents would say "you bought ANOTHER book". So now I just tell the clerk I don't need a bag and stick it into my purse, or I throw away the bag. I'm sure they notice my shelves filling up, but they have yet to catch be actually bringing a book into the house!!
LOL I find it so funny that others do the same thing!

Jael: I don't need an easy way to buy more books trust me, lol.But if I get into a series with like 10 books that I get hooked on. I'll consider e-bay. I found on site where I was able to get the entire Dark Hunters series on e-books for $15.00 and the Companion. So that made me happy.

Joseph, I'm not real particular about paperback or hardcover. I usually buy paperback because of the cost savings. But if I'm buying a series, I like them to all be the same. I'm not quite as picky about authors, because if I happen across a used book sale or something and see an author I'm collecting then I jsut grab it up.

Also I am really glad to know other people hide their purchases.

On another note, you book hiders have nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, I think you have a great idea! lol. It's those naggers about us buying another book here or there that should be ashamed they are trying to impede our literary growth. Yeah, that's it, right? ;-)

LOL, I hear you on that one. I often can't get books on the day of release her in the UK, so I plan ahead and pre-order things online that I really want from B&N, amazon.com an d amazon.co.uk and see who ships them to me first. I'm freaking out about Lover Avenged though because it seems like we've been waiting forever and I'll want it on the day, but I don't know that it will be possible. ;)

I am not afraid to admit it!
Today, like most other days, I was frustrated with my work. On the verge of tears actually. So I decided to take a nice trip over to Barnes and Noble. With no intention of buying anything, I was just going to look. (yea okay.. lol)
Well, an hour later I walked out with two purchases... (very good ones I might add... Spell of the Highlander, and the newest Riley Jensen book)
::sigh:: I felt a little better though :)
Anyone else care to admit they are an addict? Raise your hand high!
