Angee Wentz (angee_wentz) Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what do you listen to? I can only listen to music, not songs with lyrics. I've been listening to soundtracks that have touched me in one way or another while I watched them, such as Pride and Prejudice or The Duchess, or Twilight (Bella's lullaby). But ultimately it depends. Usually I write at home and my husband is usually watching something relating to sports and so I have to listen to music to tune him and the rest of the world out to focus on my book's world.

Marley (Marleyme95) | 134 comments Rarely, but it can be any pop/rock music, even rap. But it can't be to good because then I get distracted, so I listen to, A few Jamie Cullum songs, Nelli McKay, and in Chicago there's a lite rock/pop station and I keep that in the backround.

That's very true, lol. I try to only listen to what "mood" I'm writing.

Marley (Marleyme95) | 134 comments Well, lately, not as much. I write really short stories like only 10 pages and then I've written novela length romances, I'm not very good though. I like poetry it is my favorite to write, and the most personel in a way.

You've written novel length romances? Do you have them posted on here? I'd love to take a look.

message 8: by Marley (new)

Marley (Marleyme95) | 134 comments Gosh no, I don't have any patience for typing, and even though they are short, I'd pass out of exhaustion.

NOT NOVEL LENGTH, NOVELA, Don't expect that much of me, trust me, I'm not that good, I wish I were. I have a friend at school who's written like massive stories, she's more talented than me.

I have two poems and a short story though, that's it right now. I need to start puting up more. In the other topic I said I don't write at home, it's because I get so easily distracted, I'd never focus if I typed, so I have to write on paper, and I'd be shocked if I could even read my handwritting.

Oh, ha ha! My bad! Apparenlty I just read what I want to see. lol. Right now I'm writing (typing actually) a ya romance novel. I hope to get it published one day—not saying I'm good or anything, but I really enjoy it and have a series idea that I would like to get started on.

Why don't you think you are good? Have a little more faith in yourself :)

message 10: by Marley (new)

Marley (Marleyme95) | 134 comments Haha, I just don't think I am. Plus, I may have good Ideas, but my grammar is a mess. I love to write though. I think I need some tragedy in my life to start my creative juices, lol. In 6th grade I wrote one of those short little romances and I crime type thing. In seventh I wrote two longer romances and started a sort of twisted memoir, but it wasn't about me, more about the people around me. But this year I have nothing, my brain has drawn a blank. I started some stuff. Maybe I'll finish some of it. However, I still write a lot of poetry!

That's awesome!! Poetry is so therapuetic, don't you think? I used to write poetry or make up deep meaning quotes all the time. lol.

message 12: by Marley (new)

Marley (Marleyme95) | 134 comments Haha, I LOVE poetry, It's odd my story-writing friend never writes it, I should ask her why. She never really has feeligns, she lives through her charecters. I have to go, I'll talk to you later, PEACE!

I listen to music constantly. I love it when there are songs that I've never heard, because they often spark stuff for me. :D

Yeah, music can help me sometimes. Three out of my four books have theme songs! Yay! ^_^ I don't usually listen to music while writing, though, because it distracts me. I always end up singing along to the songs and getting distracted. lol.

But sometimes if my writing is going well I can listen to music and still focus. When I do listen, I either choose quieter songs or, like, really emo songs. Heehee. I think I mostly listen to: Dido, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall, Corinne Bailey Rae, My Chemical Romance, Enya, David Archuleta ... heehee. yeah. some other stuff too. it depends, like i said.

Usually, I don't listen to music. But once during nano I was using write or die and I really didn't want to get distracted, so I was listening to the macarena for like, an hour. I chose the song because I don't even know what they are singing exactly. Plus when you listen to music and do something, you tend to do that thing to the beat of the music so... fast beat=fast typing.

I don't know, it depends on my mood...sometimes I'll listen to music when I write and it will help me work faster and help the words flow better. Sometimes I'll listen to music while I write and get totally distracted and listen to the words of the song or sing them. Sometimes I need utter, total silence to be able to get out one word. It depends ;)

message 18: by Angee (new)

Angee Wentz (angee_wentz) Most of the time I need complete silence but there are just those times (unfocused times) when you just need to tune out your surroundings and so music (without lyrics) can do that for me.

p.s. what in the HECK-O-BEAN does XD mean?

Lol. 'XD' is a smiley face- turn your head sideways and look at it that way. It's like someone is smiling extra big and squeezing their eyes shut at the same time. Yay! XD

message 30: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) I mentioned this on another discussion about what inspires me. I listen to music whenever I write. Unless I'm somewhere that I can't. It gets me into the mood that I need to be in depending on what I'm writing.
I need background noise to focus. Is that crazy?

message 31: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) Strange how we all work differently. I have kids so quiet makes me really nervous and just a little bit scared.

message 32: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
Haha, I can imagine... noise does indicate what's going on, and silence doesn't.

I understand about the background noise too. Sometimes silence can be eerie. Music can get rid of paranoia.

message 33: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) What? Me? Paranoid? Who told you that?

message 34: by Sella, ov vey! i haven't checked this group in months. >< (new)

LOL. Sometimes I need utter silence otherwise I can't write a word, and sometimes my fingers won't move unless I have music to get my flow going. It depends. >.<

message 35: by Renee (new)

Renee (rjmiller) I worry about the dogs too. I've got my kids, my daycare kids, and the dogs - quiet is a very bad thing. I can't be at ease without some noise.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

What doesn't work with writing, is when you're in such a bad mood you don't want to do ANYTHING. Like yesterday. I did zippo stuff.

message 37: by Seth, The plan is simple--stay alive. (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 2205 comments Mod

no, i need a little background noise too. it's called five younger siblings. lol.

seriously, i don't have trouble writing when all my younger sibs are like screaming in the next room. whenever i'm alone in the house i'm like, "ooh! this is a perfect time to write!" but then when there's nothing to distract me i just get distracted by my own thoughts so i can't concentrate. i guess having some extra noise makes me try to concentrate harder or something. ><

I get what you mean, Brigid. When I'm doing a project for school, sometimes it helps me to have goodreads open, even if I'm not looking at it. Although, it can get a bit too distracting sometimes.

message 43: by jeeves... (new)

jeeves... | 31 comments i always listen to music when i write... it sets the pace haha... apocalyptica is perfect, the album cult- it's instrumental, so there aren't lyrics to get distraced by, but it's fast and aweshum...... :D

Oh I can't do that. Because then I start wasting time on goodreads when I should be doing my project. No, if I want to get schoolwork done, I have to literally DISABLE my internet for that time, otherwise I'll procrastinate. LOL

message 45: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
I said sometimes... so sometimes I do end up procrastinating on goodreads.

And I would prefer to disable the internet too, but I can't, because for 90% of the projects, I need the internet for research.

Oh I always have goodreads open when I'm doing homework. lol. Because if I do my homework for too long I start spacing out. If I can get out some random thoughts on goodreads, then I can focus more when I get back to my homework. ^^

Yeah, that's true... a lot of times I need internet. And that's a problem, because whenever I open mozilla firefox I go onto goodreads. And then spend an hour there. It's like a disease -.-

Haha, that's not the case for me. If I did that, then I wouldn't be able to get OFF goodreads and back to my homework at all. (Of course, I STILL do that. AND neglect my homework. lol)
