Hi, Joe
Welcome to Middle-earth :-)
The Hobbit is an excellent introduction to Tolkien's world, but it's just the beginning...
I'd recommend reading it a couple of times before watching the films so that you have you're own vision of Tolkien's world firmly fixed before it's overly influenced by the Hollywood version.
Please do let us know what you think of The Hobbit once you've finished it.

The Fils r the best of all cinima
I can't disagree with your assessment, Simon, as you like what you like and that's that. However, The Hobbit films are, in my assessment, poor (I think I may have just disagreed with you!). Then again, one of my favourite films is Big Trouble in Little China, so what do I know? :-D

Big Trouble in Little China was hilarious! Especially when Kurt Russell's character shot his gun at the ceiling and was rained on by ceiling plaster & knocked out!

also: glad you are enjoying The Hobbit! What a book, fast-paced and non-stop adventure. but yes, don't stop there, I encourage you to read all Tolkien's books. The Silmarillion is a tough read at first, especially to get going, but once it does, I have yet to read fantasy novels that even come close in grandeur.
I watched Tango and Cash again recently (hence it was fresh om my mind when posting earlier) and I don't think I will need to repeat the experience. I really hope they don't remake Big Trouble - some things are good enough just as they are.
The comment threads get a little tangled at times - it was Joe, the OP, who was reading The Hobbit for the first time :-) I've lost count of the number of times I've read it, and the Silmarillion is one of my favourite books - I had no trouble reading that one ;-)

I'm about halfway through the book and I must say it is AMAZING! Bilbo is awesome!
I'm excited to be going through this series and I'll have to go through the movies when i'm done!
