Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments S&L wasn't mentioned in Felicia's Geek and Sundry renewal notice, so I was wondering if it is time to speak up about it, or if we should all chill for now. Guidance in this matter would be greatly appreciated before nerd rage decides the issue.

This friday's show (saturday for us Aussies) is the final video show.

It has been mentioned a few times on the audio and video show.

Tom and Veronica are looking at ways they can bring the video show back later on.

Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments I saw that, but I guess I assumed it would be back on Geek and Sundry when it did come back. I found it strange that of the two book club shows that Vaginal Fantasy would be the one to stay on the network.

I'm guessing it's because being just a Google hangout, it would cost almost nothing to make VF. I'm thinking it's probably a number of views/cost thing.

Personally, I will really miss the video show. I love the podcast, but there's something lovely about sitting down and watching the video. It's become my Saturday morning tradition to watch Sword and Laser with my cup of tea.

VF is co-hosted by the founder of the network.

Why?

message 7: by Rik (new)

Rik | 777 comments I liked the video show. It was the only G&S show besides the Guild that I actually watch. I tried a few of the other shows but they really didn't interest me that much. Bring on the petition!

message 8: by Noah (new)

Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments Yes, I know. I'm sure it is a great show too, but with Felicia scaling back some of her involvement (less Flog, for example) it just seemed like a strange choice. Since I have no idea how any decisions are made it is all conjecture at this point.

message 9: by Rik (new)

Rik | 777 comments If its a cost issue maybe a solution could be for Tom and Veronica to webcast the podcast much like Vaginal Fantasies is currently done. Wouldn't be as cool as the current show but it would still be a video show.

message 10: by Serendi (new)

Serendi | 848 comments I think Felicia likes the opportunity to talk books with a bunch of like-minded people. Or at least did to start. And it's a simple format, once a month.

True. I certainly don't begrudge her having fun on her own network, especially with all the hard work she does. I just hope the S&L video show can continue in some form.

message 13: by Tim (new)

Tim | 380 comments The biggest problem I had was that there's no download option. Having time to watch and being connected to the Internet often don't coincide. Partly for that reason I didn't watch any other G&S shows.

Maybe Leo would be prepared to pick it up, possibly with kickstarter funding?

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments Another excellent show cut down in the prime of their first season.

*shakes fist* Darn you Fox!

What do you mean Fox isn't involved?

I offer this now, since I won't be near a PC to post it on Friday. I'll be at the Geek & Sundry panel at Wonder-con in the S&L shirt purchased at SDCC last year.

message 15: by Daran (new)

Daran | 599 comments Don't think cost was the only factor. It seems like scheduling was also a problem. Master Lee and Number Ten OX had them having to finish up two weeks early (at least seemed that way to me). I think if things had gone on much longer, they would have had to finish the book before they announced it to us.

message 16: by Rob, Roberator (new)

Rob (robzak) | 7204 comments Mod
I think they should cut the book club part out of the video show (and keep it to the podcast) and just focus on the author profiles/interviews.

Even it they only do it once a month.

But the whole "having to finish up early" never really made sense to me. Sure it's bad the first month, but after that your month is shifted.

Example: If you have to finish January's book by the 15th, then on the 16th of January why not start February book so you have a whole month to finish that one?

It does however make it harder for them to participate/include user feedback as many people and interesting discussions may occur after the 15th of each month.

Honestly, I'm happy when Sword and Laser returns to the podcast only format, no more pre-produced shows about books which haven't been read.

Trike | 11190 comments Speaking as someone who works in video, both Tom and Veronica are natural on camera. I don't know if they *feel* that way, but that's a skill not everyone possesses. And even some who do have it aren't able to convey it.

Rasnac | 336 comments Guys, IMHO can we just take it easy for now and wait for T&V to figure out how they want to move on? I'm sure they'll talk to us about their plans on the future of the video show in due time. And then, we can show full support whether it be a petition or a kickstarter, or even occupying G&S offices Vork-style :D

Yeah, I'm assuming they have a lot on their minds right now with deciding the next step with video and working through their first anthology.

I would like to reject any pitchfork based protests. We know Felicia, we love Felicia. Felicia is one of us. Any actions done for the return of the show should be kind and done with respect.

Daran | 599 comments The State of the Sundry video worries me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUU4L0...

I'm not the huge consumer of Geek and Sundry that I once was. I love Table Top and Sword and Laser. I haven't watched an episode of The Guild since they launched the channel, though I thought enough of the series to buy DVDs of season one and two. Storyboard has been interesting, Rothfuss has been a great host, but episodes are so long I only watch once in a while.

Honestly, if the channel is going more the way of Learning Town, and Space Janitors, I'll only be watching Table Top this time next month. I can find funny little skits almost anywhere, but genuinely interesting author interviews are a demand with virtually no supply. I thought Sword and Laser was an excellent use of this medium.

Serendi | 848 comments I keep hoping to find a schedule or something for Season 2. We seem to be getting the info in dribs and drabs. Anyone have a better info source?

message 26: by Serendi (new)

Serendi | 848 comments I have RealPlayer on my PC and it allows me to download lots of videos, though not all. Don't know what determines whether it'll download. Plus I hardly ever use it. But I have successfully downloaded stuff from Youtube.

message 27: by Tim (new)

Tim | 380 comments I told a fib earlier - I watched Space Janitors too. But it was so long ago that it was last on that I forgot about it! (I'm a bear of little memory...)

I'm gonna miss the video show but Geek and Sundry's "next level" kind of worries me just because it seems to be almost all about gaming. The channel isn't going to have the diversity of shows that season 1 did. I'll still check them out because I do love Felicia. But I am bummed out.

message 31: by Sam (new)

Sam | 25 comments Since I'm assuming The Guild is finished, Tabletop is the only show left that really interests me. Storyboard is awesome too, but doesn't really seem like it in any way requires being part of Geek and Sundry since it is just a GooglePlus hangout...

Yea, these are my thoughts too. Written by A kid has its moments too. But other than S&L, Tabletop and The Story board and sometimes Vaginal Fantasy hangouts I don't really watch G&S. If they cancel those things, I'll probably unsubscribe.

message 33: by Casey (new)

Casey | 654 comments I'm a big fan of the Storyboard and so I am hoping it sticks around. I also really like Vaginal Fantasy (though I feel slightly embarrassed admitting to this truth). But why should I be embarrassed, I mean come on. Four highly intelligent and attractive women discussing books. That's tough to top.

message 34: by Daran (new)

Daran | 599 comments The thing about Vaginal Fantasy and Storyboard is that if G&S dropped them, they could still go on. They have very little in the way of production costs. Tabletop, and Sword & Laser have better than average production values; something that I think YouTube needs more of.

While Spae Janitors and Learning Town are of decent quality, they are the kind of things you see at 3:00am on Adult Swim, and say t yourself: "If I lived in Denmark, I would be getting so much more out of this."

message 35: by Noah (new)

Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments So, I'm getting the sense that a petition isn't the way to go. How about brainstorming ways for the show to continue elsewhere? Kickstarter has been discussed, but surely we don't have to stop thinking there.

message 36: by Serendi (new)

Serendi | 848 comments Tom and Veronica are already looking into options, so I'd be inclined to let them see what they can come up with. Unless they want brainstorming? Dunno.

I'm betting that's an option they're looking at - IIRC, he made them an offer for the Nerdist channel shortly after they accepted Geek and Sundry's offer. And given that Tom and Veronica are both in the business, they probably know a lot of other possibilities. Fingers crossed! And of COURSE if they want brainstorming we all'd be happy to help!

Paul Ackermann | 2 comments I never really understood internet shows and the funding styles- if the reason was who watched the show- then they would see from the hit counters.
but i think the issue would be the amount of advertising for the show.

unless the amount of people watching the podcasts are really truly low......

If you use Firefox, i would recommend the addon "DownloadHelper". With that you can download videos from almost any site.

message 42: by Vincent (new)

Vincent Stoessel (vinny2020) | 36 comments Sword and Laser was really the only show I watched on G&S. One thing that made it hard to follow for me was the fact G&S was literally *one* youtube channel, I would actually miss episode because things were all mixed together. Maybe YouTube needs to make a concept of a "network" that contains channels, so you can just subscribe to the ones you care about. Having said that, I would definitely love to watch S&L again *as it's own* channel.

Agreed. I wished I could just follow the shows I watched and not all the other stuff too.

message 44: by Walter (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 707 comments S&L and The Guild are pretty much the only things I've watched for a while on G&S. Haven't even seen all of the most recent Guild episodes either, and I've been playing WoW since its vanilla days.

As an active investor, I completely understand the necessity for making tough business decisions, but I hope that the G&S people took everything into account when they made what choices they did. It's one thing not to renew a series with a smaller audience when the audiences are dovetailing, but quite another when you're dealing with shows with separate audiences. Then you just lose the viewers of the second show to a competing network, or its equivalent, with even less chance afterwards of attracting them to your other offerings.

message 45: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 701 comments I actually haven't seen a g&s show since they started this new season. I only watched s&l and storyboard as they came out. I then sometimes picked a couple of episodes from other shows while i was there. Since I now have no reason to visit ar a regular basis I find Im not really motivated to go search out the other shows anymore.
