Gaby Testa This discussion is about what you people think on unwinding. Do you think that if you get unwound you will die? or will you simply be a part of someone else?

Tina J This is a hard one.
I think that's why this book is so brilliantly thought out. Because as Shusterman explains it, you would still be technically alive.....just in pieces!

And this is also proven in the book when Lev meets
Cy-Fy! The boy in his head still thought he was alive!

Example, if a family member of mine had died & their heart was given to someone - yes, I would think a part of them was still alive. Yet, I would still consider them to be dead.

This is why Shusterman's concept of this book is amazing!
As you would be BOTH alive & dead at the same time.
I know that sounds stupid. lol
But I can't explain it very well.

Gaby Testa I know EXACTLY what u mean :)

Gaby Testa Well ur right. The soul does make us who we are. Thats why i believe that if ur unwound ur dead.
Because even though your still alive. Your still alive in someone else's body and you don't have your soul with you. Once you unwound you aren't YOU anymore. Your a completely different person. So in a way YOU do die.

If you guys continue to read UnWholly, there's a character in there that this discussion TOTALLY realates to (please make a discussion for UnWholly)!

Also, we do stay in divided state. Even though some organs don't have the ability to think (i.e. brain), if you had a healthy liver, the liver unwound would continue to be healthy, yes?

lily mihok I just started reading unwind and I wanted to agree that if you die, you are technically not dead.

I read or watched the somewhere, but one of the characters said "If I picked up a sword and ran it through you, it shouldn't cause you pain. You will die, but your soul will not." or something along those lines, I don't really know the exact words.

But I do agree that you wouldn't be you if placed in another's body because you don't have your soul with you. I'm not really sure where this is coming from as I have only just started the book, but I'm assuming I will find out later in the book or the series.

Nayeli Reyes I always question myself this because I don't know which side I actually believe. It is like 50/50 for me I don't think that unwinding kills you because throughout the book there was scenarios where it would be explained on why you're not really dead yet again I do think that you do die once you're on a divided state because it's not truly you anymore your soul is gone whether your body parts are still 'living' you aren't but because this is in a dystopian world where you live are still living in a divided state then that is what i'm going to go for.

LydiaA I really think the debate is mostly dependent on your definition of "alive." I am inclined to say that the unwound are dead because they have no capacity to continue living their own individual life. Cy-Fy was an interesting character because it was a good exemplification of how the unwound organs behaved. And though we see that the other persons brain is able to somewhat take over, we know that that was a highly irregular situation. I have basically no medical education and don't really know anything about the brain. Having stated that, I would imagine that the brain, even removed from its original position and placed into another person's head would still carry many traits of the original person. That doesn't necessarily mean that it retains any sense of individuality of the original person and, to me, doesn't strictly say that they are alive. Also, on the topic of having a soul, people get organ transplants often enough in the real world. I've never heard of anyone ever saying "Oh yeah, I donated a kidney. Now a smallish part of my soul is in that guy over there." I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure no one thinks that. Despite the capacities and abilities of the different organs, they are still all just organs. It is hard for me to believe that the soul would be assigned to a specific organ rather than just be an abstract concept.
