Hey guys, I'm looking at the group's empty 'Bookshelf' space and it is depressingly empty! In lieu of this, let's start building a list of r/book's favourites!

What are your favourites and why?

What books have inspired you, changed you or shaped you?

What [kind of] books would you like to see on the group's shelf?

List, discuss and recommend!

Ashley (icecheeseplease) I've been thinking about this too. There's always the reddit recommendations list that we could go off of.

Maybe we could start our own list so that it is more personal to -our- group?

Andrew | 16 comments What about the Necronomicon by H.P. Lovecraft, It's great and it looks fantastic, though it can get some odd looks if you read it on the bus.

@Ashley I was definitely thinking something more personal to our own group! :) I'm sure we'll be adding our monthly reads to the bookshelf as well

@Eric I definitely think adding Slaughterhouse-Five is a great idea considering how many people on this forum have a lot for Vonnegut and have suggested the read to both Ashley and I in other topics. Fight Club is also a great suggestion.

@Andrew Lovecraft is a great suggestion!

That could become one large and diverse bookshelf very quickly.

I think it could be interesting if every participating member added one book to the group's bookshelf to share :) Would that be an idea everyone would jump in for?

Ashley (icecheeseplease) I love the idea of everyone adding their favorite book! Let's start a list!

And @Rose, I made a shelf for the 'group reads' already I guess we just have to add other books first for it to be visible (?)

EDIT: Nope, it would seem that the only books that show up on the shelves are the ones marked as "read" so Fool and Dune will show up after they're marked as such.

Added 1984! It's a favourite of mine for not only the story but how it's eerily relevant to any society at any time. I honestly think that the book should be required reading for everyone, ever. After reading it in my 20's I'm pretty upset that this book wasn't made topic in my high school English or Social Studies classes.

I read it in high school, although, I must admit that I wasn't giving it my full attention. I'd like to read it again sometime soon.

As far as my add to the shelf, I choose Saga- a comic, to further diversify our shelves.

Alas, we had a variety of great books throughout my own grade school, some I don't regret reading at all. Actually, I read Orwell's Animal Farm in 9th grade, even. After reading 1984 a few years ago, I was like "the heck didn't I learn this book?!" high school English novel studies were my favourite. I like picking things apart >_>;

Yay for diversity!

This book by George Orwell is of great class and is relevant more than ever. It's a brilliant read

I added the The Hours and although I don't have an absolutely favorite book, this is one of my favorites of favorites. I love the language and the way it just drew me in.

Although confession time: I have never read Virginia Woolf, of which the Hours centers around her at times.

I'll be adding more books as we go.

Eli | 7 comments The Giver, Gathering Blue, and The Messenger by Lois Lowry are some of my favorites. I think the book that has changed me the most is the Harry Potter series. Yes that sounds immature but those books are what started me on my reading journey C:
and I agree Fahrenheit 451 is amazing!

I added Hatchet since @Eli reminded me the books that started me on my reading journey. Certainly a quick read :)

And I went for the First Law trilogy (that's right, I cheated and added a collection) to go for a great series that's not in the top 200 on Reddit.

@Philip Blake! Ha! Way to beat the system and add something that's a collection and not on reddit. I'll be adding that book to my list.

I'm adding Under the Skin by Michel Faber.
I love this book, made the favorite of favorites list because of the character Isserley. For the longest time, my online persona was Isserly. The way she is developed and Faber wrote about her, just made me connect.
