Welcome, readers, authors, publishers, agents, editors, artists, reviewers, and literary enthusiasts. We hope you will find your membership in Modern Good Reads to be diverse, thought-provoking, enjoyable, and full of interesting discussions and activities. We started this group with one mission: to engage book lovers in thoughtful and valuable activities that enhance the enjoyment of reading great books. Please introduce yourself, and let everyone know what you like in your reading activities. Authors, please do not introduce your book promotions here, just yourselves. Book introduction may be posted in the category, "Author's Corner." Now, let's have some fun.

Question: is there going to be a Literary Fiction/Women's Fiction category? I didn't see it on the Home Page.

Hi, Jenna, I'll look into that. I think you're right, a Literary Fiction category would serve many readers. Thanks for the suggestion.

Deborah Jaeger | 1 comments Thanks for inviting me! I love to read so many different genres and am eager to discuss. When I'm not writing, you'll find me with my nose in a book. I like everything from thought provoking reads to suspense and lighthearted easy reads so I'm looking froward to jumping in. I just finished reading "The Light Between Oceans" and prior to that "Gone Girl". I love to discover new authors. The most inspriational book (to me) I've read is "The Alchemist". I credit that one with actually leading me to the water...I actually jumped in and wrote my first novel soon after I turned the last page. Highly recommend it for self motivation. Anyway, looking froward to some lively debate and conversation!

Ilsa Madden-Mills | 2 comments Thanks for the invite! I write New Adult Romance, but I read absolutely everything.

Debra Parmley (debraparmley) Thank you for the invitation Chris! Hello everyone!

I am an author and a voracious reader. I read and write in mulitple genres, though most know me either for my romance novels or my poetry. My reading tastes are somewhat eclectic.

message 14: by Jan (new)

Jan Scarbrough (jan_scarbrough) | 3 comments Thanks for the invitation. I'm slowly trying to figure out Goodreads and other social media. I was a reader before a writer. I've found it all too easy to Buy with One Click at Amazon. My "too be read pile" on my Kindle app is LARGE!

Claude Forthomme | 8 comments Thanks for the invitation, Christopher, I'm very happy to be here and look forward to sharing my good "finds" and learning about yours. I'd like to add that I don't see any Boomer Lit? These are books aimed at boomers as their major audience, featuring boomers as main characters and bringing up issues with which boomers are concerned, now that they are entering the so-called Third Act in their lives...

I wrote a couple of Boomer Lit novels and started a group here on Goodreads to discuss this new genre.

Curious? Come and visit the group (here: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/8...), participate in the debate about this hot new genre, add your views! Rather than mention my own work, just to give you an idea, here are classic examples of Boomer Lit: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, About Schmidt and more recently The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, a debut novel that was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize last year. It's still going strong, if you haven't read it yet, you're in for a treat, here's the link:

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

Happy reading!

And, by the way, you'll discover that Boomer Lit sells: there's no secret to that, after all baby boomers, clocking in at 78 million (all those born between 1946 and 1964) constitute the single largest demographic and they control 70% of America's wealth. There are people who buy books and read them!

message 17: by Jan (new)

Jan Scarbrough (jan_scarbrough) | 3 comments I'm a baby boomer. I wrote a book with a FORTY year old heroine, but was told by friends who write for Harlequin that they wouldn't buy a book with an "older" heroine. So I published it with a small press. I'm glad to see Boomer Lit is coming into its own.

Scott Alexander (scottalexanderbaker) | 5 comments Hello all. I think this is an interesting group of ideas and people. Happy to be able to join.
My name is Scott Alexander Baker, I am an author of several full length books, and I write regularly for online and offline sources in many areas of interest.
I love fiction and non-fiction, but really admire a few authors in particular.
Neil Gaiman and all that he does,
F. Scott Fitzgerald (But mostly his Short stories)
More recently Dan Brown.

And I only hope to create works that Maurice Sendak managed so well.
What a mind!!!

That should be Boomer Lit! There's a group discussing Boomer Lit, go take a look if you don't know it: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/8... We love to discuss the fine points of Boomer Lit!

Toni Kenyon (toni_kenyon) | 6 comments Hi,
I'm Toni and I'm an author who lives in New Zealand. We're at the bottom of the globe (yes, down under Australia, LOL) but it's a gorgeous place to live.
I like reading angst riddled contemporary novels with twisted and tormented characters. Some of that tends to find its way into my romance - which makes life interesting for my characters and my readers :)
Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Toni

message 39: by D.H. (new)

D.H. Nevins (dhnevins) | 81 comments Hey everyone! Looking forward to engaging in some excellent discussions about books, books and more books! I read almost anything, but tend to gravitate towards books with an interesting plot, a few twists, multi-dimensional characters and a little romance. The romance can be secondary, dark or even hopeless, but I always find it adds an extra layer to the stories. Oh, and if there are some supernatural elements, that usually grabs my interest too. However, my favourite book of all time is Shogun, so I suppose supernatural elements aren't a must for me.
I love talking about books with other readers, so I just know this group will be a whole lotta cool!

message 40: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 6 comments Hello Everyone,
I look forward to following this new group. I'm a first time novel writer, but have written Church music for over thirty years. My novel is a thriller and is self published. On Facebook, Goodreads etc., I go by Joseph, but feel free to call me Joe. I read all genres. My collection of books has increased since I bought my Kindle last year.

I, too, am interested in this category.

message 48: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauramhartman) | 2 comments Thank you for asking me to join your group.

I love so many different genres, it is difficult to pick one. It depends upon my mood when I am choosing the next book to read.

Mysteries and thrillers of all types are high on my list. Give me a horror story or historical fiction and I love it. Cozies are great light reads, but sometimes I feel like a classic such as the Great Gatsby or To Kill A Mockingbird.

message 49: by Virginia (new)

Virginia Brasch (virginiabrasch) | 2 comments Thank you for the invite! This group sounds wonderful and I really look forward to discussing and discovering some great reads!

My personal tastes run towards Romantic Suspense but I read a pretty wide range of genres. I love a good page turner.

message 50: by Julie (new)

Julie Powell (julie_powell) | 21 comments Hi, Chris - this is me asking if I can - offer my own books (mobi files) for review, list my books, mention my books and talk about my books...or anything else to do with my books? I read and review other self-published works to support others like me.
