Dan in AZ | 2960 comments For anyone still having a little trouble navigating, I stumbled through this sequence: When the site opens to Recent Updates, go to the bottom-right and hit "expand;" then scroll down and on bottom-right hit "more:" then at top left hit "discussion" and you'll get the different folders in threaded form. This is the only way I was able to find individual folders.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments Thanks Dan...I will have to print this out and give it a try. I really just work by hit-or-miss :)

message 3: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments the other thing that helps me is just hit the unread button and only the ones i haven't read yet will show up.. after i read the thread, i can scroll up and click on the "unread topics" and it takes me back to that list.

That's what I do also. A two-step process! Well, three... when I get to the last post I hit "back to top" and then "unread topics" when it reaches the top.

That's what I've been doing.

Dan, I know I've seen the "recent updates" page, but I can't seem to find it now. When I sign on to Goodreads I get a list of my groups. When I click on that, I get a list of folders with topics listed below them.

Also, when you're in a page reading messages there's a menu on the upper right, just above the "Search Posts" box. Click on "Discussions" in that menu and it takes you (or me, anyway) to a list of folders.

As Sherry and Carol said, I just toggle back and forth between the "unread topics" and posts. But if you're still catching up, the list of unread topics may seem cumbersome. Since I got the original postings read, it has seemed a lot easier to look at only the unread and leave the others moldering in the basement somewhere.

Jan O'Cat, hoping moldering posts will attract some tasty little mousies

message 7: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments ...and since I didn't read or post threaded on AOL before, I am stumped as to where (which thread) to post my usual commentary. Just like now.
It is partly navigating, but could be what book am I reading. I am probably going to finally finish listening to A Breath of Snow and Ashes this Wednesday. I will be both glad and sad to see it go.

Ah, but Ann you can pre order "Echo in the Bone" (the 7th in the series) on Amazon or B/N ;) Due to be released in mid Sept 09 (YAY!) As soon as my copy arrives, I'll be locking all the doors and reading until my eyeballs fall out!

yes, I can get ready for Echo in the Bone. I will have to decide if I want to devote two months of commuting time to listen or to read it. (and I have to admit I started with A Breath of Snow and Ashes, so have the first five to catch up with too.)

Sherry | 4517 comments the 2 things i wish this site had would be the ability to go from one topic to the next without having to go up to the "unread topics" thingie. it would be so much easier .
and i wish when it took you to the page where the new posts are that it took you right to the first new post, rather than the last new post.
minor things.. overall i am liking this site very much!

Sherry, you can move the new posts to the top quickly by clicking on the date arrow. I haven't figured how how to make that a permanent fixture. Sometimes it is, other times it isnt'. I wish..............and I'm whispering here.............I wish there was a way to MAR.

message 12: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments thanks, kate!
i'll give that a try.
and don't tell carol or jan but i think on the main page at the bottom ,there is a MAR button.

Is this the one with like a hundred disks? Yikes-a-hooty!

I was thinking this very thing last night, Sherry. I wonder how often they "update" the features on the board? I'm afraid to go to the feedback group and ask, after another posters experience suggesting different font colors...

But Kate, you have to hop to the top of the list of posts to get to the date arrow, right? If I'm doing that I might as well scroll back through the posts. Well, maybe I'll try it, you never know.

Carol, people are talking about us. But I'm sure they mean it in a good way, aren't you?

Wait.. let me grab my rose-colored glasses. Oh yes, they are definitely talking about us in a good way.

Btw, I just discovered the "compare your books" and "compatability" options and was doing them with the person at the top of my list -- you! (because you are currently on line, I think) You must have known you'd found a home when you discovered that feature.

Oh man, it's like I died and went to Goodreads heaven.

I found the compatibility rating once by accident and haven't found my way back to it again. Can you tell me the path? So I can constantly bug you to be my book twin?

Gee, way to discourage an honest answer. But, because I’ve got my angel wings on today, I’ll tell you the answer.

Click on the “friends” link at the top of the screen.

Find the name of the friend you want to badger, er, compare book ratings with.

Click on that person’s name. That will bring you to their profile.

1/3 of the way down the screen, under the box with the personal info, you’ll see “Carol/bonadie (email address) is your friend.

Do not believe it. Instead, look directly under it and you’ll see a “compare books” link.

Click on that link. That brings up a list of titles we have both read, your rating and my rating of the title, and a summary of how similar our lists and our ratings are at the top.

If you look to the right of the screen you will see a further encroachment of my privacy entitled “book compatability test”. That takes you to the magic number – our overall compatability, broken down by categories of books, if you can believe it.

I don’t know where they are getting their numbers on this screen. For example, we are shown as being 100% compatible on “chicklit” books. Mayhap that is because we’ve each listed 0 chicklit books? I dunno.

Anyhow, go crazy, kitty. Consider it an Easter present.

:::::giving Carol sandpapery little kisses:::::

Thanks, Carol! For the first couple of days I went around Goodreads literally clicking anything clickable. Saw a lot of neat stuff that I'll never find again.

The "0" compatibility for zero books in that category makes sense to me. I generally avoid chicklit like the plague.

What a priceless set of posts! Thanks for helping us all figure out how many neat things there are here, and to find where those features are hiding. You have had your Angel wings on for us the last few days getting us all settled! Thanks!!!
