Perenelle | 67 comments Personally, I think what your friend said is true. It doesnt seem like the really truly love eachother. That is why i like The Infernal Devices, because it seems genuine and sincere, Tessa's feelings to Will and Jem.

I think it could've been developed better, their love for each other. But maybe because it was originally supposed to be a trilogy, Cassandra Clare couldn't really change it? Idk :S

message 2: by Britt (new)

Britt (theinfernaldevice) Your friend is right. They have not had any time to actually develop feelings it's ALL lust.

message 3: by Emily (new)

Emily (tmi_lover26) | 45 comments Very true. In Infernal devices Will and Jem really go into their reasons for loving Tessa. Will just gives up so much for Tessa and Jem has his "awww" moments too. Plus Tessa is a way better protagonist than someone like *cough* Clary *cough cough* (srry that was uncalled for)

Jace and Clary on the other hand were more like a "love at first sight", which one could argue, isn't really a love at all. It's lust. They feel compelled to be together yet I never saw any reasons as to why, other than the superficial, "you're hot, I'm hot, lets get together". So to conclude, team Clase really has some work to do.

message 4: by Perenelle (new)

Perenelle | 67 comments I guess they believe it's true love and all, but my favourite ship would be Twill (or whatever you call it) and Jessa. Wow those names sound odd o-o

It just seems like there,s more to their relationships than Clary and Jace's

I see now that Cassandra Clare's writing in TMI isnt as great as in TID

message 5: by Rosie (new)

Rosie | 59 comments i never really thought about it until now, but now that you have brought it up, i guess it is true. and jace abused her. i think that if he truly loved her jace would be able to have broken through Sebastian and stop himself from hurting her but he didn't

message 6: by Yasmani (new)

Yasmani | 58 comments Clary could of picked bringing Jace back to life before anything else. When Jace was under Lilith's control she did everything to free and when he was under Sebastian she even pretended to like Sebastian and believed that Jace was in there somewhere. Also if they didn't love each other they would of been happy to find out they were brother and sister but even hen thinking they where related they couldn't stay away from each other.

Hannah (hannah1) | 911 comments Mod
Yer I do think its love but Cassie hasn't portrayed that. I remember In COFA I think Clary is looking at a photo of her and Jace sitting on the steps of the institute now I can't remember if she was a reading a book and he was hugging her or what (something along those lines) but we don't actually hear about that happening. I think because it was a trilogy something's can't be changed but by Cassie injecting little things like the photograph here and there that's her way of trying to show there's more depth to them then what just been written

Kaylah Eiramenna Carrell (wearebutdustandshadow) | 117 comments I agree that there is a lot of lust between Jace and Clary, but there is love too. If you notice the way Jace is constantly sticking his neck out hoping to die, right up until the point that Clary came into his life, he found meaning with her. It was through Clary that Jace found the will to live. Clary, I think, just doesn't know how to have a boyfriend like Jace, she hadn't really ever dated anyone before him, so of course there's a lot of lust for her right now especially, but you can tell that she is beginning to truly love and understand him...((:

message 9: by Renee (new)

Renee I think that in books it's very hard to make a decision on that. I'm writing a book at the moment and I'm having trouble believing that my characters could fall in love in a month, I think it depends on the character and also the reader's experience. My best friend and I met each other and by the end of the week we were inseparable. I think it depends on the situation, so it's very plausible for Clary and Jace to love each other. Also, they've seen each other quite a lot, it was only in City of Lost Souls that they were really separated a lot.

I'm excited for City of Heavenly Fire!
I actually am counting down the days already.... 269 days to go! lol

message 10: by sofia (new)

sofia (sofiadlm) | 9 comments If it were just lust, they wouldn't have made everything to prove that they weren't siblings. What for? Just get someone else.
They have more history in those two months that most people have in a lifetime, I do believe them in love, for one can hardly live without the other.

message 11: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephanie_nichole) | 30 comments In my opinion I believe they truly love each other. I would never put myself in the situations they do to save someone I didn't love or care about. I wouldn't do it for someone I just lusted after. I really can't imagine them with anyone else either. They just work so well.

message 12: by Liz (new)

Liz (elizabethisafangirl) *covers ears* I love Clace almost as much as Malec (is that possible?)
Also, I do think they love eachother. My dad married my stepmom after three months of actually getting to know her.

message 13: by Ana (new)

Ana Sofia | 4 comments THAT'S NOT EVEN A QUESTION!! Of course they do!

message 14: by Renee (new)

Renee IKR??? CLACE IS AWESOME HOW DARE ANYONE QUESTION IT!?!?!

okay, back to my other comment up there. ^

message 15: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (livvie_simone) So excited for the next book :)

message 16: by Niki (new)

Niki MYB | 33 comments Now that you bring it up, im can see what you mean. Maybe the angel blood in them is making them feel for each other in a lusty way and the human part of them makes it as Love?

message 19: by Ave (new)

Ave Binks (somuchtoreadsolittletime) | 16 comments Oh they definitely lust for one another, there's no denying that, but I'm a strong believer of the absolutely wonderful and powerful love that Jace and Clary have for each other.
I tend to believe that most romantic relationships can be put into 2 categories:
#1)The relationship can be based on both characters having tons of interests and activities in common and form a deep friendship between them that turns into a romantic love.
And #2)The 2 people in the relationship may not have a lot in common but just by having that other person in their life they become a better person themselves and that can turn into romantic love, too.
Jace and Clary are friends but their most like the 2nd one; they may not have a similar background or read the same books or listen to the same music but they respect each other, they consider one another the most important person in their lives and are empowered and given strength by one another. That is what makes them an amazing couple, just by thinking about the other they get an intense feeling of calm and love and want to return those feelings <3 Oh, I just LOVE Clace!! <3
Plus they share a wicked sense but of humor ;)

message 20: by Taylor11 (new)

Taylor11 | 14 comments I think Jace really loves clary but I think most of clary's interest in Jace is lust.

Like Jace was attracted to something about her rather than thought she was smokin hot. He even talks about stuff he likes like how she went to rescue Simon from the vampires.

From what I can gather clary is kinda pretty and closer to average than gorgeous. So I really think Jace loves her for her and not just all horny for her.

Clary on the other hand is ALWAYS going on and on about his hotness. Sure she has prob grown to like other things about him but even so she NEVER stops going on and on about his hotness. So she is def dating up in that sense.

So I guess Jace at least fell in love with her while she fell in love with his body and to be fair, he does sound pretty hot.

Regardless, Clary annoys the crap out of me coz she does come off as so superficial.

message 21: by Lily (new)

Lily I think they do love each other but as others have said, in infernal devices concentrate more on building up the relationship between Tessa Will and Jemma. I find that in the mortal instruments the main focus is on the main plot/ problem and clary and jace's relationship has been turned into a sub- plot.

message 22: by Lily (new)

Lily Omg I'm so sorry! I'm on my tablet and it autocorrected Jem to be Jemma!

message 23: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) I agree with @taylor11

message 24: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) I never really liked clace because I noticed this I don't care what happens to clace both clary could die and I wouldn't care but if jace or Simon or Magnus died I'm going to find Cassie and stab her in the heart with a wooden knife. I don't give a for clace

Allison Janezic (allilj) | 120 comments Priya I don't have a clue to what you are trying to say. Except that you don't like Clace.

message 26: by Christie (new)

Christie (CJ838) | 50 comments I think it is true love between them and its just how they express themselves. Jace is not a sap or romantic and Clary has a strong character as well. So when they are together it's a lot of pent up frustration because they can't express themselves. It's just how they interact. Clary has expressed what a magnificent person Jace is. That's what you think about someone when you're in love. Sometimes they are just amazing and you don't understand fully why because you're blind by love. Sometimes they just are the most attractive, beautiful person on the planet to you. There are all kinds of love.
Some would dispute that its not "love" if the other person doesn't love you back. If so, does Simon really love Clary?

Julia Griffis - The Romance Bibliophile (theromancebibliophile) Very well said, Christie. I completely agree with you:)

message 28: by Christie (new)

Christie (CJ838) | 50 comments Katie:- "At one point, he said he loves her because he saw his own recklessness in her and that made him automatically protective."

I love that! It's like they have the same souls. They see and understand each other in the deep dark spaces of their hearts.

No I don't quite agree...there were more than one occasion where Clary did not just brag about Jace and his hotness (which by the way I think was CC's doing because its a YA book and us readers would want more of the hot blonde guy than that of the lucky chick who gets to be with him)...Clary loves Jace not because he's strong but because she can see through his spiky armour and down to the softie, gentle guy he truly is and she loves that hidden part of him.

priya (gpriyaa) I think I was trying to say I don't care what happens to clace. And I agree with @taylor11

message 34: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) No nvm I don't I think their realationship is 60% lust 40% love

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they love each other, and yes they have lustful moments. ;) COHF

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Clace needs to chill with being reckless, but otherwise they're pretty cute.

message 37: by Eri (new)

Eri (musicspeaksforemotionsunsaid) | 123 comments I think that Clace do love each other because of how many times Jace risked his life for Clary. I think that in a book in the series had Jace telling Clary that he was jealous of Simon because something along the lines of he wanted to be close to her like Simon was. Something like that. Also when Jace was under the influence of Lilith and he would have dreams about killing Clary, and when he woke up he would be sick and throwing up and scared, and I think that if all you had was lust toward a person you really wouldn't be scared for their lives and you would shrug it off in my opinion. But I also wonder, how long had Tessa and Will, and Jem known each other before they fell in love? About the same time right? So I don't exactly think that, the time frame was a good argument. Oh and correct me if I'm wrong about that.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

I love how in After the Bridge by Cassie Clare, Tessa says "A Fairchild and a Herondale... I like that. The Fairchilds are so practical and the Herondales are... Well, you know." And I'm just like Clary? Practical? Lol

message 39: by chinami (new)

chinami I feel that what jace and Clary feel is more in the lines of lust. Granted, they jump at every chance to save one another's neck. Every time they get together, all they do is kiss and try to take it further.
When Tessa is with James, she listens to his violin and when she and Will get together they read poetry. If you ask me if there is an iota of love amongst them, I will say yes.
If Clary and jace were really in love, they will be more normal. They could have talked about simple things or jokes. Or go for a walk or drive. They don't have to speak anything. That is love. With Simon, she shares friendship and that history would be great had they been in love. Some may argue that everything will be predictable. Clare wants us to believe that the love is true but she gave us very little reason to suppose they do.
On that note, this being a teen novel, it will have unbelievable love at first rights disguised as true love. Characters will race against time to save one another. I am not implying that there is no love. Its not obvious.

message 40: by Alyson (new)

Alyson Stone (alysonserenastone) | 281 comments I think they do.

message 41: by Itxamara (new)

Itxamara | 779 comments I think they do but I think their love is more needy. I know that from Tessa, Will, and James, it's a different timeline but Clary is reckless and immature, so that makes it her jump into big time trouble when she NEEDS to save Jace. They might be so needy for each other because they once thought their love was prohibited and such.

message 42: by Nim (new)

Nim (nimsalenta) | 1 comments I personally think that they never had the time, i mean theres always something going on so they're never able to connect or just you know go on a date. But i am a Clace fan, so i am going to go with the latter and that they are in love.

message 43: by Emilie (new)

Emilie (readingreadingandreading) I completely agree with Christie! Of course Cassie is showing the passionate "lust" filled moments, but you have to imagine the other conversations or moments. Like she's not going to put a part of Jace and Clary deciding what to have for dinner! (even though i would read it ;)) She's writing the lust moments cause that what a lot of people like to read. I think they love each other but that's just what iv'e gathered based on what they do for each other. And Clary is one of my favourite female main characters because she's vulnerable and strong at the same time. I don't think she's superficial at all. I personally loved TID but it was pretty cliché. I love Will and Jem but the whole thing was crazy. I was literally throwing the book across the room because i wanted Tessa with Will so bad!I thought she said yes to Jem's proposal for all the wrong reasons. I LOVE CLACE! AND WESSA!

Kaitlyn {Daughter of Hecate; Shadowhunter} (ktlynm19) | 39 comments I feel like in the beginning, they started to early when they barely even knew each other, and during that time, it felt more fake. As time went on though, they definitely got to know each other more and I think that what they have now is true love considering all they've been through.

message 45: by Sasha (new)

Sasha | 175 comments I think that clave really does love each other because they went through so much jace died and clary brought him back to life and I'm pretty sure it wasn't just for sex or lust and izzy Alec even Simon can see how much have and clary love each other I mean have begged hodge to go find her. I mean what do you think I don't have anything against it because I could see why she would think that but yeah idk

Lainie (thereversecowgirl) Yes, they love each other!!!! My world rocked a little at there even being such a question. Especially toward the end of the series there were some very sweet scenes between the two (cue me crying). They are each others worlds. I see what could be said about their feelings being very lustful, but those emotions do not even begin to touch on the strength of their love. Jace and Clary are both boldly passionate in everything, including their amorous actions towards one another.

lol do i rant much? not at all...

message 50: by Sara (last edited Mar 20, 2016 02:47PM) (new)

Sara (luv2read445) | 15 comments Okay, let me just say this.
Clary says in the City of Bones at one point that, 'in all that had been going on, she had actually forgotten that Jace was good-looking.' So, she really wasn't paying that much attention to his looks to begin with. Yes, I think that Clary cared whether Jace thought she was pretty or not, but she never seemed to think of him in a romantic way until he kissed her in the greenhouse. Before that, he was just an unattainable, attractive guy at the Institute.

As for Jace, well, he claims that something 'felt wrong' when he saw Simon and Clary in the coffee shop. By that point, he felt a certain pull towards her, and maybe that's a little unrealistic, but it's fantasy. Then Jace tells Clary the story of his childhood, when his father killed his bird. Jace didn't tell Clary that story just so that she'd think he was sexy or something, he told her it because he wanted her to know him, and even though he never mentions that he's the boy in the story, Clary clearly figures it out. If he was just lusting after her the entire series, then don't you think that he would have had sex with her in the first book? Why would he wait the whole series when he clearly could have had her by the middle of the City of Bones? That doesn't make sense.
Besides, Jace and Clary have been through a lot together, and you don't stay with someone for the next five years, (as is mentioned in Lady Midnight,) just because you think that they have a good body.
No, I really and truly believe that Jace loves Clary, and she him. Yes, I do agree that they attempt to have sex many times, but they're teenagers, and that's what teenagers do, even if they love each other to that extent.
The Mortal Instruments is an amazing series, and I think it teaches us a valuable lesson; that love does not destroy, love conquers all. As the inscription in the Shadowhunter's Codex read, "To love or not, in this we stand or fall."
