The Hobbit
(One of the best books ever)

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha! :D It's so ninja.
Bilbo is awesomeness. But I prefer Boffur and Killi and Gandalf. :D
I've read it three times. :) I love it too.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, okay, Bilbo beats them all. ^^

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) | 7675 comments OH you're kidding me D: Alright. If you want x3

Here we go ...

Bilbo Quotes:

"I may be a burglar ... but I'm an honest one, I hope, more or less."

"I should think so - in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty, disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!"

“I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led. And through the air, I am he that walks unseen.

I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen for the lucky number.

I am he that buries his friends alive and drowns them and draws them alive again from the water. I came from the end of a bag, but no bag went over me.

I am the friend of bears and the guest of eagles. I am Ringwinner and Luckwearer; and I am Barrel-rider.”

"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!"

"What have I got in my pocket?"

“After some while Bilbo became impatient. "Well, what is it?" he said. "The answer's not a kettle boiling over, as you seem to think by the noise you are making.”

Quotes about Bilbo:

"'You have nice manners for a thief and a liar,' said the dragon."
~Smaug

"Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick."

"You might not like my burglar, but please do not damage him."

“It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterward were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait.”

Other quotes ...

"Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpatating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a good deal of telling anyway."

Aanddd ... the whole book >:D These are just some I found the other day :P There're more that I like. Like, "Good morning!" xD

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) | 7675 comments OH And I love the riddles!!

My favourite'd be some of Gollums' really poetic ones ... umm, let'see ...

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and over hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

And the fish one is beautiful <3

Alive without breath,
As cold as death,
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail, never clinking.

:3

I'm currently reading The Hobbit. On Chapter Seven.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Awesome!
But you have it as only three stars so far, correct? O.o

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I read it before and, as I was about...what, eight? I couldn't get into it, either way. So I dropped the book just before the dwarves arrived and that's my rating.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah, I understand. I read it when I was eight(ish), too. Couldn't get into it, either.

You MUST READ :D

message 42: by Flore (new)

Flore (florefritz) I personnaly didn't really like the hobbit but as you guys all do,
there is this book: the first pillar (everville) by roy huff and i heard from lots of people that if you like the hobbit you probably will like this one too. So, if you want to read this: just put it in your to-read shelf and you probably will get a mail from the author (i did) asking if you want a free kindle copy. :D

(sorry for this really long text)

Was there a reason you didn't enjoy The Hobbit, Flore? the first time I read it I disliked it, too, but when I re-read it after watching the movie is became one of my favourite books ever.

Thanks for the recommendation! Will check it out :)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) | 7675 comments Amber *Jace and Clary Forever* wrote: "The book, no offence to the author, is kind of a drag. I love the movie though with the whole pale orc concept."

If I may ... the book, The Hobbit, was written in 1937. That's around 75 years ago. It's a modern-ish classic, and if you compare it to other books of its time, pretty easy-to-read and interesting. You have to allow for the age of the book :) ... you can't expect it to be action-packed.
When I first read it, I struggled to finish it, and though liking certain parts, never wanted to go through it again.
Then I watched the film.
And I read it again. And it's now pretty much my all-time favourite book.
I encourage everyone to read it again :) I love it to bits, and once is not enough.

None taken ^^ Everyone has their own opinions. And the film is excellent.

message 45: by Flore (new)

Flore (florefritz) To johanna:
Well, I guess I didn't really like it because it was like if nothing really happened. They walk, get attacked or see some kind of creature.. And this again and again... Something actually happened with smaug (i'm not going to say anything for people who didn't read it yet) ...but they didn't even do it themselves!

But anyway, don't worry ;D i will try lord of the rings 1 again.

message 46: by Ciara (new)

Ciara | 144 comments Same with me Johanna! I love it now and am so glad I gave The Hobbit another chance! :) The movie really did it justice.

message 47: by Sinda (new)

Sinda Quietus (superwholockedtrekacrossthestars) | 2846 comments I have been procrastinating about reading The Lord Of The Rings. So what I think I'll do is watch The Hobbit movie AND THEN read it again and continue to reading LOTR. I feel like there's too many books I have to read and LOTR is long and I'd have to devote a long time to read the trilogy. Any opinions?

Sounds like a flawless idea to me, Sinda - In fact, that's exactly what I did xD. Everything makes so much more sense when you read The Hobbit first, and then LOTR straight after while everything's still fresh in your mind :)
It worked out for me, anyway, so I hope it works out for you ^^

message 49: by Sinda (new)

Sinda Quietus (superwholockedtrekacrossthestars) | 2846 comments Yeah. :D I finished The Hobbit a few weeks back I think, and I don't remember all the details.
