I think assassination applies to anyone who was killed for the sole purpose of killing that person because of something they did or said or represent.

Murder, in my mind, is like something that takes place in a heated moment or during a crime.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) But you never hear about some homeless person being assassinated. Its usually someone of importance.

Yes, but in my mind, if someone singled out a homeless person and killed him/her just for being homeless, that's assassination.

I also think of assassination as a quick kill, not torture.

Usually it seems as though assassination applies to important or pivotal people. If a person is killed to send a specific message, I suppose that is considered an assassination.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) ok, I looked it up in dictionary

assassinate
1 to injure or destroy unexpectedly and treacherously
2. to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons.

From Merriam-Webster dictionary ☺

I definitely think of it as the second definition. Thanks!

Lol!

I guess the first definition would apply to character assassination.
