Great job on the list so far! What's up next for you? I'm currently reading The Secret Garden and loving it.

You've read loads. What did you think of The Lovely Bones?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I found the lovely bones to be blah...I was expecting more.

Kim DeCina (ladyindigo) | 2 comments Secret Garden is amazing and one of my favorites, so sad I missed it as a kid. I've kind of got four different things going on in terms of to-read and challenges, so I'm actually reading for something else right now, but next up is probably The Handmaid's Tale.

For The Lovely Bones, I found the writing style to be beautiful but there's intentionally a whole lot of nothing going on - family grieves. Subject of grief watches from heaven. Family grieves more. It's a mood piece and a reflection, and it's very good if you like that sort of thing; I prefer a little more movement.

Also if you're in any way triggered by rape or pedophilia, or upsetting stuff like that freaks you out, stand warned that it's in there. Very, very early.

Bev (greenginger) | 137 comments I loved The Lovely Bones but I do agree with your comments.
My daughter aged 9 loves The Secret Garden.
I hope you enjoy The Handmaid's Tale. I really love it but then I read it initially years ago and I think it has dated ( in a feministic sense). Many young women hate it but I am an old bat so..... :)

I loved The Handmaid's Tale Bev. I thought it was so unlike anything I've ever read, and fantastic!

Have you seen the film version at all?

Nicolle | 343 comments Mod
Nope. Wasn't even aware there was a film. Is that as good?

At all weird? Can't imagine watching that as a film. Would be interested to see those cloaky things and hats they wear. Also inside that place where the "hookers" are.

It is a bit but does stay with you. Red outfits and the whole thing.
