This month's challenge is pick my read! We did it last October and it was a lot of fun. Here's how it works:

-If you want someone to pick a book for you, leave a comment with a direct link to your dusty bookshelf titles. The shelf can be a personal shelf or the one in the group. Or if you like typing, you can list the books here in this thread. Just make it easy for us to find what books you have on your challenge list.

-The first person to comment with a book suggestion from your list is the book that you will have to read for this challenge.

That's it!

Read, set,..... GO :)

Here's link to mine (please note - if there is a rating by it then it is read but, due to not updating for a while I have to find a day to go through it all): Shelf

Catherine | 0 comments Haley -- definitely Pride and Prejudice! I have read that one yearly for the past 11 years...
Although, if you still have time after that, go for Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf. (If you can find a copy of it, you should listen to him reading it... There is an audiobook!)

I think you should read UnEnchanted. It is light compared to Les Miserables, which could be a good thing.

message 12: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (flutterby32) | 54 comments I have not been able to finish a book for a few months. It has been miserable. Either someone is sick or I have just been busy. I am ready to get some of these books finished. It is just hard to find a place to start.

You should read the note book. Its pretty great. Have you seen the movie?

Amanda (flutterby32) | 54 comments Jimi-carol wrote: "Have you seen the movie?"

No, maybe if I like the book I will. :) Thanks for the suggestion. I have a few of his books and haven't read any of them yet. I've been meaning to. He seems to be pretty popular.

message 16: by Jimi-carol (new)

Jimi-carol Benton | 39 comments He is really popular. Ive only read a few of his because they always make me cry. He really knows how to reach your emotions and take you to a new place.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) There are too many very specific 'challenges' to fulfill, for anyone to pick my novels. Also, to strategize so many of them; I'm already in a situation where I HARDLY read what I'd rather choose. There's one group called "Wish List", a 12-title challenge to read what you really WANT, so it's a great outlet for me! {I'm "Carolyn", so folks don't keep calling me "C"}. hehehe

Okay Heather - this depends on how big a read you want ;) If you're fine with Game of Thrones then I pick that, if you think you're going to be a bit busy then I choose McCarthy's The Road :D

Carolyn, if you can't participate in a challenge, that's fine, we don't ask everyone to take part or give us a reason why they can't :)

message 20: by Heather (new)

Heather (heather_hamp) | 11 comments Game of thrones it is! Thanks Hayley

Enjoy it! I've read Game of Thrones, have just received S1 boxset of the show and will then move on to book 2. Just give it time to get into ;D

Hello Carolyn. Not sure if you are aware of it but your name comes up as C. You may be able to change that in your settings then people wouldn't call you that anymore. Anyone on here know how to do that?

message 23: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited Apr 13, 2013 09:30AM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) I'm aware of it; I'm not a computer newbie in the least. ;) It's that way for the unknown masses who aren't in Goodreads threads. I invited other frequent posters to retain (LOL) and it's nice, if I feel comfortable offering my real name by personal introduction.

Hayley, I shared my reading strategies with pleasure and wanted to a long time. It's a flip side perspective to share that I'm reading little by choice lately; all part of the journey.

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Carolyn, in order to not feel too slighted if someone does call you 'C' it may be an idea to remember that some of us occasionally need to type quickly or are too asleep in the morning to remember people's names by anything than what's on the screen (that's me before 2 teas ;D). It's not going to be a slight to you just practicality ;)

message 25: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) I usually just respond to whatever the specific "name" is listed, so people know which one I'm talking to. If two or three Carolyn's post in the same thread and I'm responding to one or more of them, I'll either hit the "reply" button or say "Carolyn with a flower, (if that's what's in her picture), I agree with what you said about....", and "Carolyn with the dog, did you see the latest....." and "C., what did you think about...." that way it's clear which post I'm responding to. A lot of people don't use their names on GR, we just respond to whatever handle they're using at the moment.

Alana with the pretty flower... lemme choose your next read... go on, pretty please!! ;D

I've finished Beowulf, which was very interesting (and who knew there was more than Grendel & his mother to be dealt with... not me!) but I've spent the weekend feeling so utterly terrible I couldn't read for the words spinning on the page so I'm a tad behind on my reading plans :(

message 27: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited Apr 14, 2013 11:23AM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Wasn't slighted in the least by those who miss that "C" = "Carolyn", when I occasionally offer it. I offered it *knowing* people feel they need to use what's displayed. If you recall what "C" is, I invite you to please use it, as a warm gesture. The good old days of "I feel good about you. Please call me Carolyn". Now then, a thread I DID want to discuss. ;)

How many of you know what I mean (#18 above) that to accomplish reading challenges, we scarcely pick what we'd rather these days? Especially anyone in many challenges? After the last book, I insisted I'd treat myself to my favourite genre and am loving "In A Witch's Wardrobe", Juliet Blackwell's series. I may pick go-to favourites a few more times.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Also an interesting tidbit that I have wondered if any one else experienced. What are the odds of disliking something but giving that author, or series, a further glance?

I found there was a lot in Juliet's first book "Secondhand Spirits" that I disliked. It was only because I had already collected most of the sequels, that I tried again. I'm so glad I did. Now I find her one of the best writers there is!

That's a tall order: have you looked at the size of my TBR? Lol! Anyway, I love challenges like this, but can't this month. Got a lot going on in my world and it's all I can do to keep up with the monthly reads in a couple other groups. Once I'm more settled I'll be all for it, though :)

message 30: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Oh Alana, I suppose I'll let you off then ;) Totally understand the effects of outside life, gets annoying when all you want to do is read!

message 31: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) I'd gladly give up reading if it meant that certain things in real life would work out right, that's how much is going on! But yes, things will settle down eventually :)

message 32: by Jimi-carol (new)

Jimi-carol Benton | 39 comments Alana, I know how that goes. I currently work 3 jobs while going to college and I volunteer al lot at my church. I rarely finish book goals in the month they are for but I enjoy being a part of it none the less. I hope things calm down for you so you can enjoy a good book soon :)

message 33: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) O, I don't mind being busy. I didn't have a job for most of last year which is why I got so much reading done. I love to read as much as (well, probably more than!) the next person, but I don't like it when it's because I have too much time because I'm not working. I'm not at all complaining about being busy :)

message 34: by Jimi-carol (new)

Jimi-carol Benton | 39 comments Under those circumstances I can see how being so busy is a blessing.
