Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments The Goodreads Feedback group is a wealth of info. There are topics galore to search and learn from.
There is one topic called the To Do List where people request improvements, and of course 25% of the time the thing can already be done, the person just didn't know how. That's where I learned about the exclusive bookshelves i posted about elsewhere in this topic.
But in explaining their wish list people wind up telling you how they use Goodreads, and it's really interesting.
The downside of this topic in the feedback group is that it is huge, and as such, every page you pull up is new. Since posts get marked as read after you pull up the page it's on, I feel compelled to sit there and read every one so I don't have to remember where I left off when I come back.
Maybe I should suggest they have options for how many posts appear on a view, like AOL did.

Amy,

The Goodreads Feedback group is a group just like the M/T Reading Friends group. It needs to be “joined” before you have full access.

To find it, from the menu at the top of your screen click on the “groups” link. Once you're at the Groups screen there is a search box on the right hand side of the screen. Type in “goodreads feedback” there and click "search" and that should bring you to the group. I forget how you join now but I imagine from the main page of the group there is a link that lets you join. It’s a public group so anyone can join.

Then, be sure to turn off email notification for new posts in this group, I’m sure it is overwhelming. To get to notifications, go to your home page, look to the right where My Profile is and click on “edit.” This brings you to My Account. Right under My Account are six tabs. Click on the one that says Notifications. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and the groups you’ve joined are listed, with radio buttons beside each that allow you to select how to get email. Of course it’s up to you, but I’d click “none.” for Goodreads Feedback.

OMalleycat | 1448 comments In another thread Carol said: "An aside, I tried to add the book in this post, but there were like 241 screens of titles that responded to Night and Day. I wish you could do an exact search for a title, some of the ones that came up didn't even have the words "Night and Day" in the title! I tried putting in quotes but that didn't do anything. "

This is something that bugs me about book title and author name searches as well. I put in the exact title/name and some of what comes back is tangentially related at best. Some appears completely unrelated and the lists don't even appear to be arranged hierarchically from most-like to least-like.

I understand a broad net when someone has only half an idea of the title they're looking for, but for exact titles it's frustrating.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Wait, let me get this straight. The self-proclaimed Anti-Threads Rebel is properly positioning a post of MINE under it's correct thread? The world has shifted on its axis. ;-)

Well done!

On a seriouser note, I think I'll go to the Feedback group and do a search for search. Someone has got to have suggested this, it's a no-brainer.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16926 comments Goodreads Friend request question - just curious what others think...
I got a friend request from Ed Lynskey - he is a Goodreads author. I don't know him or his books. I wonder if the request was intended to interest me in his books or does someone here know him / does he view our group. I wondered if any of the others in the group got an invitation too? I haven't accepted it. (but feel a bit funny about ignoring it) Thanks!

In general I wonder if it makes sense to become a Goodreads friend with a favorite author, or to just become a fan. I can't imagine an author wanting to see what I am reading (unless it it their books)
... I did receive a friend invitation from Laurie R King after I had added reviews to most of her books. I thought that was nice and indicated a bit more personal touch than Ed's invitation since I had shown interest in and enjoyment of her books. And yes, I did become a friend of Laurie R King. I am also a friend of Steve Hamilton (but he really seems like a friend since we used to post on the AOL Hardboiled board together!)
and Ed, If I have forgotten how I know you, my apologies!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16926 comments adding a tip ( and posting this twice to get in under the correct thread for GR Tips Thanks to Carol for keeping us in line!!)

Goodreads Finding Friend's Reviews tip. I had just read of Sherry's enjoyment of Lisa Scottoline's Look Again. I moved over to my Goodreads home page (link at the top of this page) and clicked on the link to Reviews (one of the links across the top of the page) and voila! There was Sherry's review. Which I didn't read since I hope to get to Look Again soon. Sherry has assured me that she didn't write any spoilers and we could have checked a box to note spoilers in case there were any.
I like Goodreads!! Note, this worked because Sherry is one of my Goodreads friends. You could aso click on the link to the book and see the same thing, your friends' reviews and comments will "rise to the top" on your Goodreads Home Page.

I'm not familiar with this writer either, but I didn't get an invitation. I'm also "friends" with Steve Hamilton and Susan Wittig Albert, whose WORMWOOD I just finished the other day really enjoyed.

Shomeret | 1490 comments Some of you may know that I'm a library student. My current assignment is to compare two databases. I've decided to select Goodreads and Paperback Book Swap which are different enough in function and the way they work to make the comparison interesting.

Part of the assignment involves user feedback. I will be looking at the Goodreads Feedback group. Thanks, Carol. But if anyone here has anything to say about their experience of using Goodreads as a database, please e-mail me at JDChronicler@aol.com. Let me know if I can quote you in my paper and what name I should use in attributing the quote.

I would also be very grateful if anyone has any comments about using Paperback Book Swap as a database. I don't think PBS has a feedback discussion page like Goodreads.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Wow, Shom, this is fascinating. I'd be interested in reading your final paper.

If you like, let me know if you'd like to start a thread for feedback to you. The up side would be that people will remember to think about this, and that building on others' comments might make for richer feedback. On the other hand, you may want to keep this private, one-on-one with you for other reasons.

I also wonder if you might come up with a couple of specific questions that might guide our thinking, especialy as we compare the two.

Now that I think about it, there is probably a great deal of commentary on Goodreads under this thread or perhaps under the Etcetera thread. But I guess then you'd have to go back and ask people for permission to use their comments.

Anyway, I use both databases, although I use fewer of PBS.com's features than GR's. Still, I'd be happy to share my opinions. (I know, this is a shock to many of you, lol.)

It would be great if you could start a thread on comparing Goodreads to Paperback Book Swap,Carol. I do have some questions that I could ask.

My paper is due May 6th. I will be happy to e-mail my paper as an attachment if you tell me what e-mail addy you want me to use for that purpose. I know that some of you are no longer using AOL.

Shom, I created a thread under the "Miscellaneous Book Talk" folder called "Goodreads vs. Paperbackbook Swap/Shomeret."
