Granta has released their prestigious list of 20 most promising authors under 40 and women authors and authors of color are well represented here. Some of the writers listed are writers whom we've discussed here -- or will discuss, including next month's book author Taiye Selasi and her book, Ghana Must Go. Some of the other novelists include Zadie Smith; Sunjeev Sahota; Helen Oyeyemi; and Nadifa Mohamed among others. Have you read any of these authors?

Congratulations to all those represented!

Ming | 155 comments Among the others... I think Tahmima Anam's two books (of her trilogy) are truly amazing. And Kamila Shamsie's Burnt Shadows is very good.

Thanks, Ming. I'll have to check those out..... Of course we all pretty much know of the talents of Zadie'Smith. What a smart, encouraging list!

Yes, I really enjoyed Burnt Shadows.
Excellent storytelling.

Beverly | 2907 comments I have read the following:
Tahmina Anam - I have read the first two books in her Bengal trilogy A Golden Age & The Good Muslim and anxiously waiting on the third book.

Xiaolu Guo - I read her - A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers. I liked her wit and writing style.

Nadifa Mohamed - Read Black Mamba Boy

Helen Oyeyemi The Icarus Girl

Kamila Shamsie - The Burnt Shadows

Taiye Selasi - Ghana Must Go

Zadie Smith - several books.

Last week I received a copy of Naomi Alderson's - The Liar's Gospel so will read that soon.

Here's a good NY Times article about the Granta list and the eligibility/criteria used in selecting this group:

did not realise that those books you mentioned by Thamima Anam were trilogy. I have read only the first...will look out for the second. Black Mamba Boy was a plesant surprise, as i just happened to be given the book and enjoyed it.
