Rebecca Martin | 5 comments Hi all! :) I joine this group mainly because I wanted to reignite my interest in the fantasy genre. Recently I have gotten into a rut of only reading a specific genre, and I want to branch out again. I am making a summer reading list and I would love your suggestions :). I like fantasy books with a pre-modern setting, I love Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and anything by Tamora Pierce. I so really like Anne Mccaffrey's Pern books (I know they have sci fi elements, but I consider them more fantasy than sci fi, I don't really like sci fi at all). So if you could help me out I would appreciate it a lot! :)

Check out our book of the month.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1409 comments My newest faves are Robin Hobb and Brandon Sanderson.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Have you tried The Dragonbone Chair or Kushiel's Dart both of those are favorites of mine.

carol. | 2616 comments Rebecca, similar to Brenda's suggestion, our "books of the month" are very popular (which is why they win!) and end up on many, many lists of 'good fantasy,' both in this group and across the site. I encourage you to look through them.

Epic fantasy to date (many of the must-reads are on here)

Gianluca (gianlucag) Hello ma'am. Welcome.
I'd suggest checking out Brandon Sanderson. He mostly writes Fantasy, and his books are some of the best I've read. The Mistborn trilogy and The Way of Kings are my favorites, but I've literally never read anything by him that was less than great.
The Chronicle of the Black Company is another great Fantasy series. I've read the first trilogy twice already, and I still feel like going back to it every once in a while.
I've also recently read The Riyria Revelations, which I enjoyed a lot. It starts out small, but the story evolves (and improves) with each new book.

L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 131 comments Hi there, Rebecca. :)

I would personally suggest The Ships of Merior and Warhost of Vastmark. They're books two and three, but as I haven't read the first, I don't feel like I can recommend it. I really loved these two, though, and there are more after them, if you're looking for a longer series.

Enjoy! There are so many good fantasy books out there, and this is a great place to find them.

I think I meant "threads".

Olga Godim (olgagodim) | 308 comments Rebecca, try Sharon Shinn's Samaria series, starting with Archangel. These books are one of the best and most original fantasy series out there.

Talitha (victorian_soul) | 271 comments The Name of the Wind is one of my favorites. I read that book in three days, it was so enthralling.

I lovedThe Name of the Wind. I hope to read The Wise Man's Fear soon

Carl Alves (carlalves) | 44 comments Right now I'm reading Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, and I would highly recommend it.

message 13: by Chris (new)

Chris (vocaltic) | 2 comments I'm late to the Brandon Sanderson party, but I just finished reading all of his books over the last two months (but not his YA books). I suppose you could say I highly recommend him.

message 14: by Todd (new)

Todd | 12 comments Brent Weeks

Peter V Brett

Trudi Canavan

Among Thieves by Douglas Hulick

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Well...up to now no one has mentioned The Deed of Paksenarrion and I'd also recommend the series that follows it and is now "in progress" beginning with Oath of Fealty.

(Everyone knew I'd recommend these).

There's also the Green Rider books ( Green Rider is the first).

There are others depending on other factors like how dark you like your fantasy and so on. The classic Amber books by Roger Zelazny (the first series primarily) are good. There's also The Riddle of the Stars or the Riddle Master series (starting with The Riddle-Master of Hed).

I could go on, but I'll give you a break. :)

Ed | 30 comments Loving Mistborn so far!

message 17: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 50 comments Johnny, I've got to second The Riyria Revelations. I was a bit unsure after the first part (liked it, but it didn't hugely enthuse me) but from the second onward I really liked it.

Joe Abercrombie's stuff is great (I'd read in order, so First Law Trilogy, Best Served Cold, Heroes and then Red Country), as is Scott Lynch's. The Lies of Locke Lamora starts a bit slowly but the middle and end are fantastic.

Oh, and the Codex Alera is a great six part series by Jim Butcher.
