The Transition Movement discussion
New members VISIT HERE FIRST
Also welcome to Ed, a long-standing friend, who joined up without my noticing! Glad to have you here Ed.
Welcome to Traveller also! Sorry Traveller, Goodreads doesn't do a very good job of posting new Group membership in the feeds.
Thanks, Ted! I just happened to notice the invite about an hour or two ago, so I still need to suss everything out and read the background and get the book itself... but thanks!

Thanks for setting this up, Ted. I'm looking forward to the reads and discussions.
Welcome to Vasja and Roger, our two newest members. Hope you'll consider joining the group read that you can find out about on the discussions devoted to it. Plenty of time yet to decide about that, see the reading schedule.
I would encourage all members of this Group to tell any of your GR friends that might be interested about the Group.
And who might be interested?
(1) People concerned about the environment and climate change;
(2) people concerned about running out of non-renewable resources on a finite planet;
(3) people interested in building local inter-connectedness;
(4) people looking for alternatives to an economy built on consumerism and a "growth forever" economic paradigm;
(5) young people in general.

Thank you Ted, I will.

I got your invite a short while ago but I tend to drop off here and there so I hadn't had a chance to come on and take a look. Thank you for inviting me though. I am looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts on a subject that is not just dear to me as a lifetime nature lover, but also as a person involved in sustainability-related work. Thanks again and I'm excited to at the very least read along as much as possible.
Welcome to Barbara, our newest member. Barbara, if you decide to join the group read, I think we can arrange to use the same book - if you can tolerate underlining! :)
I don't know why there's no feed when someone joins a Group. Goodreaders keep sneaking in here under the radar!
So, I've noticed that Sally and Miquixote have joined. Great! Welcome to the Group, hopefully you will both consider joining the Group Read.

Glen, a good place to start if you haven't already, would be the Wiki article on "Transition Towns". That gives a good introduction.

Ellie, welcome to the group! We're glad to have you join. As you may have seen, this is a very slow group read, so you shouldn't have any problem catching up.
By the way, is there a local Transition group "on the ground" in your area?

I have long time interest in environmental issues but have not heard of the Transition movement before. I'm interested in learning about environmental movements in general. I live in the Chicagoland area.
Since I'm not a moderator, I don't think I can create Folders for this group. I recently read a few interesting articles about environmentalism and environmental movements that I thought would be interesting to share. Could someone create a folder for other environmental resources or articles? Perhaps there could also be another thread somewhere for other group suggestions?
Cheers!
- David
Thanks for signing in David. I will do something about the folders you're looking for.
New folders in place, David.

Not that I can find out about (I live in NYC-the Bronx). I'm very worried that my grandchildren or greatgrandchildren will have no planet left to live but other than worry I'm not sure what to do. So I joined this group when asked. The book is fascinating so far.

Ellie, have you taken a look at the Local Action thread in the Beyond Reading folder? The first message in there might help you locate something near where you live.
I actually tried it just now, and the closest symbol I could find to the Bronx was labelled "Albany", which isn't close at all.
There are a couple others in the NYC area however, so it might be helpful to look into those. It's possible that you would find one of them that has meetings or other members that are reasonably near by, sort of a reach-out-able distance maybe.
Failing that, it's possible, even likely, that many people in your area have similar concerns as you do, and have started coming together in one or more organizations which are not directly patterned after Transition.
But rather than my enlarging on this any further here, why don't you check out the other thread, and if you comment over there I could reply on that thread, which might make all this a little more visible where others might be looking for similar information.

I am a member of my local transition group in England. And have been interested in and following the initiative from an early stage.
Looking forward to some more good 'transition' reading....
Welcome Janine, it's wonderful to have a new member who is active in Transition. We will be trying in the weeks and months ahead to come up with ideas capable of engaging the members of this GoodReads group, and will certainly be grateful for any input you can give.
Feel free to comment on any of the posting about our current read, which I late putting up this week.
Please take a look at some of the other Transition discussion threads (not just SotW 2013) to see if there's anything you'd like to add at teh present time, and I hope you have a rewarding time on GR.

Hello William, welcome to the Group.
Right now we're engaged in a group read (the first thing we've done, actually). I must admit that isn't going too well, apparently it being summer is part of it, and perhaps a group read of a non-fiction book just ... well, I don't know. I'm keeping up with it at any rate.
Sometime I hope to convince some of the members to just drop by and converse more frequently, if not about this book, then perhaps start a discussion about what they want to get out of the Group on Goodreads.
It sounds as if you might be interested in such a thread. I could suggest for you to put thoughts into the "Suggestion Box" thread or the "Local Actions: thread, or if you can think of a different thread that would have a better name let me know and I'll create it.
I've been involved in a local Transition group here in Columbia MD, so I have a fair amount of knowledge about Transition. Our local group has a web site at https://sites.google.com/site/transit... which is updated fairly frequently.
Do you have a local group in your area? At http://www.transitionnetwork.org/ they have resources that allow a person to search for groups in their own area.
Again, glad to have you join. I believe I will get a notification if you leave a comment on any of the discussion threads.

Rick, thanks for the name. I hope you have a chance to look at the Howard County website. (We didn't really get that set up until close to a year after the group got going.)
As I said, I might be able to help with some advice, and the woman who is the Transition goddess in our group would also be willing to help I think, even though she is very busy. I am retired but she is running her own consulting business, so not exactly blessed with mounds of free time.
Keep me advised.

Well, Caroline, just pick away as you please, and welcome to the group. You will see that it's not very active right now, but I am trying to come up with ideas, and also soliciting ideas and thoughts from other members (about half the members never visit the group as far as I can tell, but I guess that's probably par for the course with Groups).
See the thread General/Wither now? if you want to contribute to this effort.

Thanks for the invite, Riku.

Due to work overload, I won't be able to be very active in this group. However, I do support any efforts to save this planet from destruction by the shortsightedness of politicians, thoughtless individuals, and money-greedy corporations.
Jan, Sue, Lilo, Welcome to the group. Please do feel free to comment any time. I'm glad that Riku invited you all. Please check the thread about nominating a book for our next group read, and join in on making a recommendation if you like.
I need to get around to inviting other friends of mine also, I did that many months ago but have more friends now so I need to do it again.
Thanks so much for joining, Elham. Please be encouraged to suggest a book to read on the thread at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Welcome aboard, Maria. We can use all the help we can get from new members like yourself. Also see the link in msg #45.
Thanks to both of you, Cheryl and Sai. I'm busy this evening trying to finally finish my review of the first Group read this group had (State of the World 2013). Once I've done that I'll be posting some other info in this group. Again, many thanks for joining, and welcome.

I wasn't aware of the Transition Movement until I got Ted's invite; it turns out there was a local meeting less than a mile from my that started about a half an hour before I started investigating this.
I live in San Francisco, so that group is TransitionSF, which has a meeting the last monday of each month.
I'm pretty pro all this stuff, but also very pessimistic, so I'm ambivalent about putting energy into a "movement". I'd be more interested in a Preemptive Response to the Collapse Movement, intended to keep the level of civilization from collapsing too far in the coming century or two.
Books mentioned in this topic
Countdown: Our Last Best Hope for a Future on Earth? (other topics)State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible? (other topics)
It would be helpful if, as a new member, you could mention things such as
- whether you have any experience with the Transition movement;
- your general location;
- what you're interested in getting from membership in the Group
