I kinda like the characters but I do think that they can be quite un-relatable at times. But none of them are amazingly likeable which I guess makes it a bit moer realistic but yeah, its hard to find things to like with them all at times.
The plot is definitely thickening. There's more political intrigue than I expected - not usually my thing - but I like it. Not sure where it's going. And it's a little slow moving. I like the world building but the magic system should have been explained better by now. For me anyway, it is still a little confusing.

I agree on the magic system part. I felt like it was not explained welleven half way through yo are stll somewhat confused! O think if he would have done a better job explaining it would have been a better reading experience. The plot was good even though I did not enjoy the book as much i thought I would mostly because i really did not like the characters that much!

I like authors who trust the readers enough to figure out things on their own. I'm not a fan of huge information dumps. I like my information to blend naturally into the plot of the story. But a little more of a hint would be welcomed, Lol.
I'm thinking there are at least two forms of 'magic'. The first is what would be thought of traditional magic, like Gandalf, Harry Potter, etc... The second is what I would call alchemy, or science I guess. More like the magic found in the Mistborn books. Maybe???

Well i dont want to spoil anything so I will not responf to that but in Mistborn I felt like the magic system was original yet very well explained a bit better than this book!
DO NOT post any spoilers from further along in the book, this is just for chapters 9-15. Discussing events from these chapters and previous ones though is perfectly fine.
