Does anyone remember the first book they remember reading?

I remember reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. In fact, I remember loving Eric Carle's books and we'd often imitate the art in our classrooms.

I remember reading that one!

I have a terrible memory, so I'm actually going to skip past children's books and say the first significant books I read were in the Deltora Quest series (I'd link, but I'm on my phone).

Ashley (icecheeseplease) I'm the same, terrible memory. My first book was probably a Dr. Seuss, I had a ton of them.

Jennifer | 185 comments Probably a Berenstein Bears book. I was about 4 and sort of learning to read, but I could recognize the word "neighbor" when we were reading one of those. My mom thought I had learned how to read complex words and got really excited. What can I say, my mother has always been unduly impressed by me.

Mothers will be like that! I loved Berenstein Bears when I was kid!!! :)

Tom Emerson (TreeRex) | 8 comments The first book I ever really sat down and "read" was Treasure Island when I was 9. Long before then I can remember loving the Richard Scarry books, and I can remember my mother had collections of fairy stories from Disney that dated from the 1950s or so that I would look at over and over.

I also cannot remember reading as much until much later, so the Goosebumps books for me. I devour them as a 4th/5th grader :D

Alex (alexgmcm) | 41 comments I remember reading the first Harry Potter book when I was very young but I might have read The Hobbit before then. My grandmother had a huge number of books and would often read to me when she looked after me but she read historical fiction style books (Pillars of the Earth etc.) which I doubt I understood other than becoming more confident at reading and so on.

I remember reading R.L Stine and Paul Jennings as well... in fact that was probably before The Hobbit even.

Ugh, I feel like a senile old man now! :P

message 9: by Danielle (new)

Danielle The first book I remember reading was this one: Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman I had it memorized. I also remember a lot of Dr Seuss books and children's encyclopedias. The first chapter books I can remember were the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, but I know I must have read more before that. I remember I used to go to the library all the time as a kid and then I would hide in a corner of my house and read for hours.

Chay | 2 comments I think it was Matilda - Roald Dahl. I was a bitterly disappointed nine-year-old when they left out the parrot (budgie? Don't quite remember.) in the film.

I loved all of his children's books; he's one of those authors that never went away, I discovered his autobiographies and adult short stories sometime in secondary school, and keep coming back to them.

message 11: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (lindsaynicolel) I remember being 5 years old and reading The Hobbit. I didn't finish it until years later, but I remember feeling so smart reading a classic story when many of my other classmates couldn't read at all.

Jonas (jvandermaesen) | 5 comments I used to read many books as a child, but the only one I remember by name is a dutch book, De brief voor de koning by Tonke Dragt by Tonke Dragt. It's an edition from 1962, so there's no ISBN on it yet.

I've read that book countless times, and it's probably the main reason I love fantasy to this day. :)

Micki Rentauskas | 7 comments The first book I clearly remember reading would be Number the Stars in second grade. I remember my teacher was so shocked when she found out I had read it.

W.B. Dallas (wbdallas) | 26 comments I want to say where the red fern grows but I'm not entirely sure. I remember it being... really sad.

Ljubica (ljubicatodorovic) | 2 comments First book? I don't remember. I remember Hungry Caterpillar being read/shown to us in school, and that I hung out in the school library and public library a lot. Read lots of comics as a child as well. In grade 4 or so I was reading Goosebumps, Wrinkle in Time, Rabbits in the Bathroom, Snot Stew, Rabbit Hill etc. (kids books). That turned into R.L. Stine in grade 5 and then I started on the fantasy books that summer/beginning of Grade 6.

Alex Tveit (vikingabroad) | 33 comments First one that I read on my own was The Little Vampire, which was also the first series that I absolutely fell in love with.

The first series that I remember being read to me, was a story about a kid going to Valhalla, and stories surrounding his time with the Norse Gods. Loved it, but don't remember the title. :(

message 17: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 27 comments I memorized a book called 'Do You Like Cats?' before I could actually read. My Dad read it to me every night. I must of been only 3 or so! The fact my parents read to me every night made such an impression on me.

I loved the Laura Ingals Wilder Little House on the Prairie series too... I was reading them in Kindergarten! The spin off series were good too!

I remember impressing my teacher in elementary school by choosing to read 'Roughing it in the Bush' by Susannah Moodie.

I read at a really early age, especially being an only child that was to small for sports. I think the first books were probably Dr. Seuss and then progressed quickly to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wind in the Willows. I remember starting out to like Nancy Drew but getting bored quickly when they were all the same plot with different objects missing!

Goosebumps and Paul Jennings for me too. Although I also remember reading stuff like Animorphs too.

I remember carrying around a copy of Casper, yes the novelization everywhere I went in Elementary and some kid in my class stealing it <_<

>_> He was in so much trouble and his little group hated me after that because I got him in trouble >_< Ah yes, awkward 2/3rd grade me.

message 21: by Rajiv (new)

Rajiv Ashrafi (rajivashrafi) | 2 comments I've read quite a few books, but the very first book that left a considerable impact was Lord of the Flies.

It was part of literature class in school, and I was sure I'd be bored by it. But the book drew me in, wined and dined me, bled me dry, and left me by the side of the street.

I still remember the first time I read it. The opening was damn good, then the kids start forming tribes, then the violence... I loved it. The ending was powerful, too.

message 22: by Clayton (new)

Clayton I read most of the kids books from 90's but the ones I remember reading the most was the Goosebump books. I read all the ones that were currently out when I was an older kid.

message 23: by Onur Çağın (new)

Onur Çağın Gürlek | 2 comments It was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for me. I first read it when I was 7.

message 24: by Reev (new)

Reev Robledo (reevrobledo) | 3 comments Aesop's Fables, I think. :)

. (ends) | 1 comments I'm pretty sure it was a Dr. Seuss book, not sure which one. Around the same time, I read this tiny (in size) book for kids/by kids that mentioned President Clinton in it. But that's all I can really remember about that one.
