“We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived” Have you ever thought of your scars as beautiful? Does this "pact" make you feel closer to the narrator?

"Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."

Any one know where this scar quote came from?

Magdalena Vinson | 11 comments That would be Albus Dumbledore speaking to Prof. McGonagall in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" about the scar on toddler Harry's forehead.

Also, I have a good friend from college whose application essay, where you had to tell something about yourself or describe yourself somehow, told her story through her scars, some of which are very obvious. I'm not sure if I've ever thought of my scars as beautiful, although I do think of them as a map showing where I've been and what I've done with my life thus far. Even if they don't look like much, I know the stories behind the causes and where I was when I acquired each of them. Although none of them are as handy as an indelible map of the London Underground would be...

One of the 'getting to know you' activities my husband and I did was to tell each other the stories of all of our scars. Of course ours were not nearly so heart-wrenching as some of the ones in Little Bee, but it was a way we could relate where we came from :)

P.S. Harry Potter is amazing and if your kids are reading it you can follow along with the books on www.pottermore.com and see extra features. For instance, it turns out Professor McGonagall has a great backstory which was not mentioned in the books.
