Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 8 comments I'm still a while away from finishing all of the original works but I know that there have been a lot of other Sherlock stories. Which ones would you recommend for when I finally finish the Conan Doyle stories? I wouldn't really know where to begin.

Mitchell Fobbester (the-mad-king) | 8 comments The only non-ACD stories I've done so far is “Sherlock Holmes: The Rediscovered Railway Mysteries and Other Stories”, its worth a look, they're audio books narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. I've got a few other books but I've not read them yet, i'll let you know when i get round to them

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 8 comments Ah, thanks. I looked through my recommendations on here and a few caught my attention.

Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street

The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Professor Moriarty: The Hound of the D'Urbervilles

Huh, so these are Sherlock Holmes books not written by ACD?

message 5: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 8 comments Yeah. 'Sherlock Holmes...' is a biography charting his whole life, so it's not written by Watson. 'The Improbable Adventures...' is a collection of short stories written by various authors and 'Professor Moriarty...' is a novel about Moriarty and his sidekick.

M.R. Graham (mrgraham) | 7 comments The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes is written by ACD's son, and I believe are 'officially' approved by his estate. I think there's another volume of them, as well, but I don't know what it's called.
I also very much enjoyed The Oriental Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, though it's been some years since I read it.

Huh. This is rather intriguing. I might possibly check some of them out. Maybe. Maybe the ACD's son ones.

by Andy Lane

It's a series of Sherlock when he was a kid, and all the stuff that made him the way he is today, or rather back then, but you know what I mean.

I've always wondered what he was like as a kid ... is it good?

Eck, I wonder if this is the origin of that horrible movie... >_< XP Young Sherlock Holmes. Oh cheese, I detested that thing. They made us watch it in school once, and I was dying the whole time.

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) That looks nothing like Sherlock Holmes O.O

M.R. Graham (mrgraham) | 7 comments It was terribly Spielberg, even for his early days. I shudder to think what would have happened if they'd had access to more CGI than they did. It'll always hold a special place of nostalgia for me, because I grew up with it, but it really is very silly. xD That horrible "lost love" subplot...

I liked the first two but then I had to wait till the 3rd one came out and I wasn't really into it anymore, so I don't know about the other ones

M.R. Graham (mrgraham) | 7 comments As with many works of pastiche, I'm sort of able to enjoy it by not taking it seriously. :D The Waxflatter character was brilliant. Watson and the LSD pastries of doom was a bit, er... Well, not much I can say about that, is there?

Mitchell Fobbester (the-mad-king) | 8 comments I've seen the movie to, and yes, it was an abomination. I didn't know there was a series but i can't imagine it will be any better.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I hated that movie too, but to get back to the original question, there are numerous pastiches (imitations, homages, continuations) of ACD's works on Sherlock. There are many short story collections and anthologies, but I prefer the novels. The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel by Anthony Horowitz was an excellent straightforward ACD imitation. I thought the Caleb Carr pastiche, The Italian Secretarywas pretty dreadful. By far my favorite is The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King, which is the beginning of a series about Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. Some of these are better than others, but the good ones succeed because they focus on Russell, who is a hero in her own right, and dispense with Watson. I love Watson but it's nearly impossible to reproduce his voice.
