Discussion thread for Anne Rice's signature book!

Looking forward to reading it! Should start in about a week

I saw the movie! :D

I read this many years ago when it was all the rage. It started me on an Anne Rice kick which I thoroughly enjoyed at the time. Of course that was pre-Twilight and vampires were not quite so .... prevalent in popular culture. I hope all those who read it enjoy it as much as I did at the time, but I can't see myself revisiting it right now. I'm encountering a Brave New World instead. P.S. The book was so much better than the movie.

I was given Interview with a Vampire as a teenager for Christmas. I can’t remember if I had seen the movie before or after, but I’m a fan of both. If I remember right there’s quite a lot of descriptive text but I’m not sure if that’s because I read it at a younger age. It will be interesting to hear other people’s take on this. I may pick this up again in the summer, as it’s been many years since I’ve read it and I think I would probably gain a lot more from it this time around.

Loved this book and the rest of the series. I have read and reread this book countless times and can't get enough of it. Anne rice made vampires interesting and romantic in a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks kind of way.

Her imagery and description and character detail is what makes this amazing

Robin I totally agree with your comments. I enjoyed Anne Rice pre Twilight but I am not sure if I would nowadays.
The book is much better than the film which I found improbable with the casting.

I'm reading this book now. I didn't know much about it, and I was skeptical because I tried reading Twilight and didn't like it in the least. But I decided to read it because of the reading list this month. Well, I'm absolutely in love with it. Anne Rice is an amazing writer. The characters are all so well developed that I feel like I know each one of them! I will definitely be reading more of her novels.

The vampire lestat i think is the best in the series follwed by queen of the damned...nothing like the movie which was awful

I bought this book used not long ago. My partner and I were reading it together. I got distracted by having a baby and haven't finished it yet, but as far as I read to (view spoiler)[ which was the turning of Lestat, I believe (hide spoiler)] was really well written.

I'm 150 pages in and so far I'm finding it a bit long winded. It's good descriptive writing and the story is interesting but the way the narrative jumps back and forth between the present interview and louis' dense paragraphs of the story is distracting, IMO. I'm wondering what is going to happen to the interviewer though for sure, which adds another element to the story telling I suppose.

Wow, I just finished it. I have to say, though I didn't anticipate enjoying it so much, I absolutely loved it. I'm going to have to read the whole series now haha. I'm hooked! I'm really excited to read The Vampire Lestat, he was my favorite character!

I'm not sure if I like her writing style in this book (I prefer The Vampire Lestat & Queen of the Damned personally), however I do find Anne Rice's philosophizing existentialist vampires more interesting than many other fictional vampires. I also like her description of historical settings.

I was pleasantly pleased by how well written the book was. I was completely consumed by the world that Rice dreamed for her characters. She stayed faithful to her story to the point that I knew how it would end because if it didn't end that way she would lose the loyalty she had created throughout the novel. She knew her characters so well and was able to relate that to her reading audience. I liked this book and I am not opposed to reading another of her books.

Interview With a Vampire is one of my all time favourite books, but even I'll admit the series really floundered toward the end. I think Queen of the Damned is pretty firmly rooted in my worst ever reads.

Good to know, thanks! In the end the ending of IwaV just wasn't captivating enough for me to want to go another round but it was a good book overall. Not my preferred genre but that's why I'm trying to do group reads, to get out of my preferred genre sometimes and experience something different.

An interesting book. I am planning to read the next one in the series soon.
