A group of professors from universities in the U.S. and Mexico have submitted an innovative Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) proposal on Harry Potter and Issues in International Politics to win an E.U. fellowship. If they win the competition - run by iversity and Stifterverband, Germany to produce creative, high-standard online university courses – it will allow tens of thousands of people around the world to study the political issues raised by J.K. Rowling’s stories for free at their own pace regardless of where they live. You won’t even need an apparition test… through their interactive videos, and online assignments and activities, the four course professors will transport this virtual version of Hogwarts straight to your desktop!

MOOCs have been running online since 2008 bringing a wide range courses from top universities freely to hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. It's the closest thing to virtual apparition we have in education to date and has revolutionized the way we now understand and practice teaching and learning in higher education.

This course relates themes in the Harry Potter series to international political issues involving national identity (Contemporary Transfiguration), technology and the future (Divination), terrorism (Defence Against the Real Dark Arts) and the global media (Charms). It’s full of interactive videos and creative group assignments that students can work on individually or together through Facebook or Google + Hangout. It also involves multiple choice tests, quizzes and essays that reflect the high international academic standards of the best existing MOOCs already out there. The course is introductory undergraduate-level, so the only things you’ll need are competent written English skills, an interest in issues in international politics, and a good knowledge of the Harry Potter stories before term starts.

And the best news is that you can help to make it happen! To turn this proposal into a reality, just go to the link below, watch the short introductory course video, vote through facebook, share and be a part of the magic of the future of global education. Voting ends on May 23rd 2013 and if the course wins the fellowship, it will run online in late 2013 or early 2014.
