Anybody have any good studying tips????

message 2: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) I absorb information by paying attention in class.

Tip-really listen in class

message 3: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Do your homework as soon as you get home. That way everything is still fresh in your mind.

message 4: by Court (new)

Court I don't study..I just listen in class..

use what you learn in everyday life. For exampl if you just learned a new vocab word try to use it sometime that day.

I was that way all through elementary school till the end of high school. I didn't get the best of grades either. So, believe me, my habits totally reversed when I was in college. I overstudied, which is just as bad as understudying. I did get better grades in college, though.

It depends on which high school you go to and what classes you're taking. You'll have to study eventually.

Yeah, you will eventually have to study.

message 11: by korrinamoe (new)

korrinamoe Pay attention in school.
Take notes.
Don't PASS notes in class.
Reread the chapter.

Don't be a bitch.

People have a right to say whether they want to study or not. Maybe they don't need to study for certain things.

yeah i don't need to study for math but i need to study for science and english.

I only need to study for french. Everything else (well currently, next year I have some AP classes though) comes easy to me. I guess that's just because of my good memory. It makes me feel Lucky:D

Milana (tutuintopointe) | 779 comments Mod
I have to study for science mostly. And sometimes history it just depends.

message 15: by korrinamoe (new)

korrinamoe I have to study for science. But I always manage to get an A in that class, but a B in math. Hope I'll bring it up...

me too, luckily. i have a 90 in math.

Robert (rgbatduke) | 213 comments Here is a free guide to how best to study.

http://www.phy.duke.edu/~rgb/Class/ph...

Note especially the method of three passes.

Also go here:

http://www.phy.duke.edu/~rgb/Class/in...

and grab the pdf. Go to the "preliminaries" chapter, and read it. It also covers TMOTP, but it has a lot more in it as well. In particular, it has some nifty "exercises" intended to teach you a bit about how your brain works so you can trick it into learning painlessly while you sleep.

The basic idea is that your brain is an instrument. The more you use it, and the more you learn about it, the better it will work for you. Recent research has shown that your intelligence is not fixed or determined by your genes or your early upbringing (although both are relevant to at least your starting point). You can increase your working intelligence by exercising your brain.

Good luck!

message 20: by Robert (new)

Robert (rgbatduke) | 213 comments Good luck! I often think that if teachers would spend more time teaching students how to learn, the students would fare much better than they do when the teachers just try to teach the material.

Learning how to learn efficiently is key to long term success. The amazing thing is that it can be learned. I learn far, far, faster now than I ever did when I was young. You also have amazing resources. Wikipedia is the missing 2/3 of my brain -- it "remembers" everything I didn't quite learn when I was in school, and as I peruse subjects repeatedly eventually I don't need to use it as much.

But the main thing is to learn how to study -- lots of small doses is much, much better than one big one at the last possible moment. If fact, if you do it just right, you learn "effortlessly", without even "studying". And you CAN do this. You do have to work hard -- one cannot learn without hard work -- but one can advance to the point where you don't really notice the work or think of it as hard; instead it is just fun!

yes, i agree. my science teacher doesn't teach us anything! she just reads from the book that is composed of all these HUGE words. i just don't see how we can be learning from her, because she doesn't really make sense. but i try my best to relate stuff to my daily life.

message 23: by Robert (new)

Robert (rgbatduke) | 213 comments Learn from books. Learn (as Lauren says) from Wikipedia. Teach yourself. The more you read, the more you watch discovery channel and NGC and the history channel, the more literate you become, the easier it is to learn. The one piece of advice I can give you is: Don't give up on science. It is the one chance you have of the world ever really making sense.

message 24: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) Advice= Discovery Channel specials. When Dinosaurs Roamed America basically taught me everything we learned in school, but when I was 6, not 10.

And Mythbusters, where you learn the golden rule. Evidence always wins. If it can't stand up, the idea is busted.

O.o What if they tried to bust religion? :D

Just remember, y'all, to get plenty of sleep and study WELL AHEAD OF TIME with opportunity to get a few nights of sleep between studying and your exams.

same same you guys.
i have honors history, honors science, math (no advanced class, but it's very hard for me!), honors music theory 1, french 2, and honors english to study for all in the next week! D:

but french will be easy cause my teacher sucks. THANKS for the luck guys, same to you all!! :D

haha, same here with french so that shouldn't be too bad. :) good luck!

message 32: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Hmmm, one tip is to make the stuff that you're learning interesting. Historical fiction books are great for this. :D You learn about the event in social studies, then you stumble upon a book set in that time period. It's great!

And I'm going to have to study for finals as well. Not this week, but next... I have six academic finals to study for. But knowing me, I won't study for physics at all, becasue I'll be much too busy studying math and bio and french and lit and world studies...

If you need help with physics or math, let me know. I am a math/physics god, all questions answered, no charge.

Veronica (v_a_b) Oh, I get physics and math, but there's just a bunch of stuff in math from 1st semester that I don't remember how to do...

That's fine, just remember that if you have any questions I'm happy to try to answer them. The best way to remember math (for example) is to learn how to derive it.

I'm so lucky my Physics teacher isn't giving us a final. If he was, I'd die D=

message 37: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Well, my physics class is only a semester, so it isn't too hard.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Yesterday I took a Spanish 2 final. There were things on it we never learned, hahahah.

Today: AP English 3. The final is on a book I still haven't finished reading.

Tomorrow: AP US History & Algebra 2.

message 41: by Jenna (new)

Jenna (backwoodsbabble) Wow! That link to the studying article is amazing! I have been trying to develop better study habits, since like alot of people here, I was blessed in high school to not need to study often or well.

It's soooooooooo different now that I'm in college.

I also agree that teaching HOW to learn would definitely be a valuable tool in the classroom. AND, since I'm studying to be a teacher, this is a perfect little nugget to keep in my head for the future.

Again, thank you all for all the wonderful comments! It is always good to learn something new! =)
