Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Here's the deal: sometimes, we read something and liked it, and we want to read something similar to that but we're not quite sure what it is. Or, we want to read something that would put us in a certain mood, but we're not sure what it is. Or, you're just tired of your reading the same genre of books and you want a palate cleanser. We all have those times, right?

This is where you can find an answer for that! If you're looking for recommendations, post it here! Want something light and fluffy or heavy on fantasy? Need something to get you out of a reading rut? Ask away! There will be people who are willing to answer that (and maybe even lend you a copy). :)

For sci-fi, you can try reading Ender's Game that is, if you haven't read it yet, considering that the movie version is to be shown in November this year. :)

message 5: by Reymart (new)

Reymart Dinglasa (ReymartwritesAbook) | 5 comments I have the Series of Ender and they're in a safe for the moment. I've read a few parts of Ender's Game and I liked it actually but I'll try reading the series before November. C:

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Hi Reymart! I just checked my shelves, and based on what you asked, I think you may like Ultraviolet by RJ Anderson and When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. :)

I can't say much about Ultraviolet without being too spoilery, so trust the reviews on this. :) When You Reach Me has really amazing friendships, a bit of romance, and some time travel. :)

message 7: by Reymart (new)

Reymart Dinglasa (ReymartwritesAbook) | 5 comments Oh Time Travel is one of the things I like in novels. :) Thanks a lot Tina. I'll check these books out!!! :)

Why dont you try 11/22/63. It is a novel by Stephen King about a teacher who went back in time to stop the JFK Assasination.

No Horror. Hehehe.

message 9: by Reymart (new)

Reymart Dinglasa (ReymartwritesAbook) | 5 comments ALOY!! I'm a huge Stephen King fan. I have the book, and I'm still far from the middle of it all. I'm actually in his third come back in the past. LOL. And, I'm waiting for his latest Joyland!! I hope we can talk more all about Steve... Are you a fan too?

message 10: by Mike (new)

Mike | 4 comments Hi! I used to read lots of sci-fi when I was in high school. If you're just starting out, books by Michael Crichton are always a good read. I recommend Sphere or The Andromeda Strain.

message 11: by Rincess (new)

Rincess Hey guys can you help us? My friend's looking for a book and I hope you can help us.

We're looking for the title of a vampire book?
It centered on vampires on an island as the setting (though, I don't think they were the main characters).

This book was divided into three (or maybe two) stories. The first story involved a kid who starts to believe that this other kid is a vampire. At the end of the story, the kid sneaks into the other kid's room and stakes him to kill the "vampire" - but it turns out the kid wasn't a vampire after all.

The last (or maybe second story...) involved some guy who was trying to hunt vampires, and he does so with the help of some other people, but at the end of the story (the characters are in a diner) the guy reveals that he himself is a vampire, and attacks the (girl?) who was helping him.

The cover of the book featured a girl's lips (red lipstick), possibly opened and showing fangs?

That's all I remember.

If you can help me remember the name of the book, I'll love you forever! Thanks!

Jan (janwrites03) | 7 comments I am looking for a new series to follow.

I just want to find a world that I can really lose myself in. There's nothing like a good series to really get a sense of a book world and start to live in it each time you read about it.

For reference these are the series I've read:
Abhorsen by Garth Nix
Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Homecoming Saga by Orson Scott Card
Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin
Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis
LOTR by J.R.R Tolkien
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice (or the way vampires are supposed to be)
Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by A.N. Roquelaure
Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell
Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene
Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (but honestly I haven't liked anything after The Eternity Code)
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch
Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett

Obviously, there's a certain feel to the series that most appeal to me. So if you could recommend something along those lines, I'd be much obliged.

Ycel | 662 comments Hullo, Jan. There's always GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire series. On the YA/steampunk genre, Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan series is very smart.

Thanks! I think I'll check out the second one. ^_^

message 16: by Kaeri (new)

Kaeri | 60 comments Just finished Please Ignore Vera Dietz and I really liked it. It's in line with Catcher in the Rye, Perks of Being a Wallflower and 13 Reasons Why. This short book really resonated with me and touched me emotionally.

Here's my full review.

Try Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. It's one of my favorites.

Raphael | 62 comments I'd like to read some WWII novels concerning the German occupation in Europe.

Mika Pisueña (mikamikspisuena) | 1 comments Hi! For those who are a big fan of dystopian/apocalyptic/zombie novels, i recommend yu guys to read 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' trilogy by Carrie Ryan. This got me hooked and wanting more of the same adrenaline-filled story.

☼Marian☼ (mgdc) | 243 comments Raphael: You can check out The Girl You Left Behind ..It's a historical fiction..If you want to watch, there's a good documentary film, it comes in 2 discs, The Third Reich. oh, and Catch-22is an awesome war novel.

message 21: by Raphael (new)

Raphael | 62 comments Thanks, Marian. I'll look into that. Catch-22 is actually one of my favorites, and I've read it thrice already :)

message 22: by ☼Marian☼ (new)

☼Marian☼ (mgdc) | 243 comments Raphael: Same here. I love Yossarian. Have you read it's sequel, Closing Time?

message 23: by Tin (new)

Tin (rabbitin) | 560 comments Jan: I agree with Erika, Bartimaeus Trilogy is awesome. (Plus a fourth book, the Ring of Solomon, which is a prequel of sorts).

Other series that I love are: Megan Whalen Turner's The Queen's Thief Series, His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman, Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness. And anything of Rick Riordan's are also good fun. :)

message 24: by Raphael (last edited Jun 02, 2013 07:26PM) (new)

Raphael | 62 comments Marian: Well, I originally planned to read it, but the amount of negative reviews discouraged me. Was it that bad?

message 25: by ☼Marian☼ (new)

☼Marian☼ (mgdc) | 243 comments I can't say. I''ve only read til page 40. The humor is still there but I wasn't able to warm up with the new characters. I keep looking for the old characters but, on this book, they're already old, and the spunk wasn't like the first. But, I admit, it's GR ratings affected my excitement in reading. I''ll continue reading it again once the mood kicks in. I'm hopeful that Heller kept it at par with Catch-22.

Agree to this as well. His Dark Materials is great. Unless the reader is a "too conservative" Catholic XD

message 27: by Raphael (new)

Raphael | 62 comments Marian: I see. Tell me if it's any good after you are done. I'll give it a go as long as it's still worth the read, even if it's not as great as Catch-22. Yossarian being there is enough of a reason to read it.

Hi Raphael.

I haven't yet, since I'm drowning in books right now. :) thanks for the heads up! I'll make that my next in line. :D

message 31: by Ranee (new)

Ranee | 1902 comments Hi fellow Murakamist! Hehe. This is how fans in Japan call themselves.
I've read both. And can't wait for the translated version of Colorless Tsukuru! This is his latest book, way shorter than 1q84. So i guess, it is easier to carry around.

message 32: by Raphael (new)

Raphael | 62 comments He's got another coming and I still haven't read 1q84. I'm still waiting for the price to drop, you see hehe

Ranee | 1902 comments Price to drop? Asa pa. May softbound na, hence cheaper and less bulky.

Another Sarah Dessen? ;) Lock and Key is not fluffy but it's light, and Harriett (one of the minor characters) is funny. :D

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I'd like to recommend The Known World by Edward P. Jones. Like seriously. I am surprised that it's not as widely read as it should be. And it's everywhere; I always see it at Book Sale branches. I think it's the one modern book about black slavery that people should read. It blew me away.

And oh, I've met the author nearly two years ago and had a little talk with him about the book. Well, I actually raved about the death of one of the characters. Too bad that I didn't have a camera phone then, but I'm glad anyway because he gratefully signed my battered copy, which he scanned for any marginalia. However, I was also infuriated because there were only less than ten people in line for sign ups. Like seriously. People should read this.

message 42: by Rollie (new)

Rollie (zheick) | 2096 comments I'd given up reading The Known World last year. I regret giving away my copy as I'm planning to read that book soon.
