Angle of Repose
question
Wallace Stegner: Is he brilliant, or what?

I am currently reading Angle of Repose , by Wallace Stegner. Just discovered him late last year. He is a brilliant writer and I can't believe that I'd never heard of him. (Loved his "Crossing to Safety".) The opening chapter of "Angle" left me in awe. It has settled down into telling the story, so to speak, but I read the opening chapter twice, and bits of it three or four times. His characters, and their emotions, are so real; his writing is like the sun dappling on waves. I guess you might say that I recommend him!
I agree with you Paul. I went on a Wallace Stegner binge a few years ago and couldn't get enough. What struck me the most, besides his good story telling, was that it was clear that each paragraph had been carefully built, each sentence carefully constructed, each word carefully chosen. Stegner was a true craftsman, like the great woodworkers of the past.
The characters in this book stuck with me a long time. The book was elegantly written and the story was addictive. It had a strange ending, but I thought it was done very well. Stegner is a great author and I plan on reading more of his novels.
Ah yes, Stegner was amazing. His writing is really among the best ever "crafted." His descriptions have you actually seeing the landscape, feeling their feelings, simply a master. After I read Angle, I went in search of anything he'd written. His books are among those I always recommend- (I work in a used bookstore).
Gosh, Paul, I can't wait until you hit the major happening in the book--you will be bowled over.
