4 stars

Devil the White City contains parallel stories of Daniel Burnham, self made architect, and H.H. Holmes, pharmacist and hotelier turned serial killer. To start, readers get a glimpse of how Daniel Burnham after building a reputation for creating superb skyscrapers becomes a shoe-in to manage the design and implementation of the 1893 World’s Fair project in Chicago. Daniel while striving to make the fair a resounding success unwittingly creates a “perfect storm” of events that lead to one of the United States’ first recorded serial killers. Henry (H.H.) Holmes uses the Fair as a means to lure young women new to the city and in search of employment to his hotel where he then brutally murders them.

Due to the subject matter I thought I wouldn’t care for this book, however, I found myself curiously interested with the storyline. I rate this book an overall 4 stars because while it held my interest until the very end, some of the changes in narration were somewhat disjointed and made it hard at times to keep focus.
