notyourfriend (amemori) | 147 comments It is already and yes they should. They need to know the official language. They can still speak other languages obviously, but they still need to be able to speak English.

Sasha Ivashkov-Herondale-Jackson (aka Clarisse) (sasha101) | 175 comments Isnt it alredy the official language?
Anyway, no matter where you are, even if its not America, it is quite important that you know the English language... i mean its basically like the univeral language... and even if you are in, (for example) China, and willing to look for a good, respectable job in a big multi-national company (Apple, or Microsoft, or Google) then im sure being able to speak English would be a pretty good skill...

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments Can we please make something clear, the U.S English is not English. It is a horrible mutation of the proper English language. There are so many things the American English mispronounces and misspells, Aluminium is how you spell it and pronounce it. Colour, Favour, Honour, also its fish fingers, not fish sticks, and its chips not french fries.

Now that I'm done ranting, America is a country of mixed races and ethnicity, people at all periods of time have congregated there taking with them their language, this includes dutch English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese. These were the countries that set out to the new world. If the U.S is to have a language it should be one of these or a mix of these.

I'm not entirely sure how you would mix the languages, it would be difficult.

I also see where you come from in terms of the U.S being English, but its not the British English, it's its own form, you have taken words from the cultures I listed and made that into the U.S English. So in a way, the language the U.S speaks is its own and so should be the official language and everyone in the states should learn it.

Billy | 195 comments It is not the official language actually.

http://answers.usa.gov/system/templat...

And even though its not official, it would be alot easier if everybody spoke it. Should it be required? No, it would be very difficult it regulate that. And what do you do with people that can't speak English? Older people who have spoke Russian for all 85 years of their lives? There are thousands of people who come to the United States for a better life from all around the world. On top of that, English is one of the hardest languages to learn, unless it is your first language. So it shouldn't be required....but more heavily encouraged.

Oh yeah....cheers, now I remember! :P
Think it went undecided in here, may qualify as a draw?
But in my book you won that one, cause all my limited points were buncha polished reshuffles...

message 11: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (ace-geek) Well thank you, but I actually thought you had won since my points were so short and you seemed to take more time in explaining things. I guess it's a draw then :)

Som Guess so. Thanks. Kudos to draw! (:

Jenn (ace-geek) Kudos :) That week can go un-judged if everyone 's okay with it. I'm entered to do another debate when they resume.

Real English people such as myself believe the language spoken by Americans should not be called English, but American.
Even in schools, they are not learning proper English. Even dictionaries do not show 100% correct English.

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments British spoken English is a jumble of languages from France and Italy (Latin) Gaelic, and norse. It has evolved from many languages, there is are many variations that have been altered with influence from other languages.
