Please post your general questions about the Summer 2013 challenge here. Specific questions about individual tasks should be posted in the Help Threads for those tasks.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments I have always wondered why the task helps for the season don't come under the general heading of the season? I always feel like I have to back out to get to the individual help topics. I am sure this question is clear as mud.

There would be too many topics in one thread and it would be more difficult for us to keep up with everything.

message 4: by D.G. (new)

D.G. This is not a question per se...

I'll miss you all! I can't join for the Summer so I'm trying not to look at any of the tasks. It's difficult, I tell you!

OK I figured it was something like that. I just wondered. Thanks Sandy.

That would be almost an impossibility for me I'm afraid. I am way too hooked in.

gasp! No, D.G.! Surely you can read one or two books, right, right? (not enabling at all....) We'll miss you!

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know if i missed it but can we use a book for more than one task?

Rule 7 Each book must be read completely and can be counted only once per challenge.

The Rules

Thanks, i thought i missed something.

message 11: by Ty (new)

Ty | 563 comments Didn't see this in the rules or maybe I'm blind -

For tasks that require publishing dates to fall within a certain year or range - is the "first published" date considered THE date or is it the date of whatever edition you're reading? I've always used the first published date for fulfilling my tasks but realized that most of the books I've read are paperbacks, usually published a year or so after hardbacks....

message 12: by Chaitra (new)

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 518 comments I have a question too and I didn't see it in the rules either. I've started a big book (1022 pages, hardcover copy). I only finished 60 pages of it so far and I have a couple of other books to read before tomorrow, so I won't get any further with this book. I wanted to know if I can claim big book tickets with this since I'll be reading 900+ pages within the summer challenge time frame.

First published is when the book itself was first published, not the edition that you happen to be reading.

you can claim BB tickets for any book that fits the challenge rules. So, since you can claim this book if you finish it during the summer challenge, you can also claim a BB ticket for it.

message 15: by Chaitra (new)

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 518 comments Thank you Sandy! And just to confirm, I can only claim 2 BB tickets, right? Since I won't be reading the full 1000 pages?

No, we don't separate it out like that. The book counts as read during the summer challenge, and so you use the full page number - it would get too complicated for us and for you to sort out otherwise.

message 17: by Chaitra (new)

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 518 comments Yay! Thanks Sandy! :)

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Just to make sure- we don't have to finish every single task in each point section do we? can i do half of the 5 point task and one or two from the 30 point task?

nope. You can do any of the tasks you want, in any order you want.

Thanks sandy! :)

jen (jenn_reads_) Just a quick question, I looked through the rules but couldn't find anything. Can we read books in other languages than English? Like, I can read a book in my native language when it fulfills the task, too, right?

Yes, books in other languages work
#2 in the Rules

Books in languages other than English may be used. Please provide information on the book and/or title to your English speaking moderators so they can understand how the books fit the tasks. Any task requiring a specific title (number of letters, number of words, specific word in title, etc.) should apply to the title that you use.

message 23: by jen (new)

jen (jenn_reads_) Thank you! Sometimes I'm really blind. (:

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Is there any tasks for 20.6 and 20.9?

Fiona (Titch) wrote: "Is there any tasks for 20.6 and 20.9?"

Patience

It is the plan to have the tasks posted by 6/7, but it may take longer. Kristi has done a terrific job of getting this HUGE challenge together. And thanks to all the task creators for being so cooperative

message 26: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Wasn't moaning lol, was curious :D

THANKS everyone who puts the time and effort into the questions and all the behind the scene work xx

message 27: by Bouchra (new)

Bouchra Rebiai (bouchrarebiai) | 97 comments A question about ebooks. I get most of my non-public-domain reading in the form of free Kindle ebooks, and I was wondering whether I could use one of them if they had paperback editions which weren't posted on Goodreads, but are available on Amazon. Or will I have to get each one of them approved first?

If a paperback/print edition is not on Goodreads the ebook will need to be verified for length

message 29: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments If the paperback is on amazon we can add it to GR - most classics will likely be in the database

message 30: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) | 19 comments This might be a silly question, but what is the time frame the group has set for the summer challenge? When did it start and when doesn't it end?

message 31: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments The next challenge will start sep 1 and go thru nov 30

message 32: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Or rather all the challenges work on the 3 month cycle - so this one is jun-aug

message 33: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) | 19 comments Oh okay, so they always start on the first of that month?

message 34: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments yep - so 1 June-Aug31; Sep 1-Nov 30; Dec 1-Feb 28/29; Mar1-May31

message 35: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) | 19 comments Awesome! And if I haven't started the summer one yet can I still participate in it?

Heather B wrote: "Oh okay, so they always start on the first of that month?"

All of the challenges start on the lst of the month. For more info about the SRC, you can check out The Seasonal Reading Challenge Explained. If you look at the folder for each season, there is a thread with a calendar for the season, as well as a list of the tasks, a thread in which to post completed tasks, etc.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Heather B wrote: "Awesome! And if I haven't started the summer one yet can I still participate in it?"

yep you can - just swing by the the Readerboard Thread - to get your name listed - http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4... (you need to make sure you do this, otherwise you won't get any points)

message 38: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) | 19 comments Thanks

message 39: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) | 19 comments Okay... I have another question and I'm not sure if this is where I'm supposed to ask or not.

I noticed that in the Summer Challenge 2013: Completed Tasks (DO NOT DELETE POSTS) thread some people have either Goodreads Authors or Big Books or both in their posts. I was wondering what this was for?

message 40: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments you can track authors that are goodreads authos and big books, and they factor into deciding who gets to create 2 of the 20 point tasks in the next season...one person who is randomly drawn from the people who claimed GR authors tickets; and one who claimed big books - you can read more about those tasks, and the other 20 point ones here - http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

SleeplessBookExplorer (laceebookexplorer) Can I start now even though I'm late ?

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments how do I link the Listopia site in the comments box. I thought I could follow the thing in some html is ok, but it didn't work.

message 44: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments you could just copy it - or check and make sure you didn't add a space into the code - sometimes that happens

it should look like title of link

message 45: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments sorry - apparently my altering didn't work...blah!!

Well, duh! I just did a copy/paste instead of the html thing and it worked. Some day I will learn to use a computer.
Thanks, Dee.
