1. Find an example of one of the following devices in the book you are reading: symbolism, irony, exaggeration, simile, metaphor, figure of speech, or imagery
2. Include the quote where you found it and answer the following question:
3. How does the device enhance the story?

Jaffer | 23 comments Snakehead/Anthony Horowitz
(Imagery) "As he jumped violently though the tiny snake made hole, Alex took his head first and went flying as superman with one of his hand in front of his head and another steady next to his hip, as he exited the hole landing on the soft gray mush that was left there by the workers done with its use."
It shows the reader what the character is going through and how the character goes through the situation that he is in.

Ginna Marciel | 24 comments Untamed by P.C.Cast and Kristen Cast
(metaphor I think) "Remember, Darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always bring good". That was said by Nyx the Goddess. She means that to warn Zoey that Neferet is not a good as she appears and has turned her back to the goddess and now is following a dangerous and dark path.

Kenesha (niecey) | 27 comments Sophomore Switch by Abby McDonald

Imagery. "The Hot-Tub Incident" This helps you get kind of a picture in your head about why Natasha would all of a sudden decide to join the exchange program to Oxford University in England. How she and Emily ended up switching places their sophomore year in college.

Ashley Brown | 18 comments Gossip
Figure of speech: in the book a girl says that one girl looks like a whore her skirt looks like she is wearing nothing.
It helps because this whole book is about drama.

emmanuel gonzalez | 21 comments book: black ships
author: jo grahams

(imagery) "the black dark old and rusty ship" because if you read it closely you can really see and feel the black ships, you feel how old the wood is and imagine how old and empty it is.

Amanda Salas | 17 comments Fool For Love/Sam Shepard

figure of speech:"I thought you were supposed to be a fantasist, right? Isn't that basically the deal with you? You dream things up. Isn't that true?"

Eddy decides for himself what his perspective, what is true, and what is possible. This idealism is somewhat nice in Eddie, but also prevents him from facing his reality which includes the feelings of others including May, so hes told.

Kevin Jimenez (latinalover) | 17 comments Book: MAX
Author:James Patterson
1. Find an example of one of the following devices in the book you are reading: symbolism, irony, exaggeration, simile, metaphor, figure of speech, or imagery
Max didn't want to have feelings for fang but at book 5 she fall in love with him.
2. Include the quote whe..."
She doesn't have to find the perfect guy anymore because she already found him.

message 9: by Collin Starks (new)

Collin Starks | 6 comments The Devil's Workshop/ Stephen J. Cannell

There is some Irony in this book. On page 104 At the end of the third paragraph, it says "Revolutionary Angels." Even though Angels are peaceful and holy.

Devices like these better show the image that Mr. Cannell is trying to convey. And in some instances adds humor.

message 11: by Gina Lamm (new)

Gina Lamm | 27 comments The Boy in the Striped Pajamas/ John Boyne

(simile)"'He runs the country, idiot,' said Gretel, showing off as sisters tend ot do."
pg. 117
It shows the reader that Bruno does not know about Hitler and that Jews are supposely his "enemies".

Adilene Macedo | 27 comments The Invisible Man/ H.G. Wells

(Imagery) "A fire," he cried, "in the name of human charity.

This device enhance the story by allowing the reader to provide itself clues on what exactly it is going on in the book more easily.

message 13: by Anthony Jaques (new)

Anthony Jaques | 25 comments Slumdog millionaire / Vikas Swarup

"I pick up the heavy bowl of soup from the kitchen and walk with unsteady steps toward the dining table." Pg. 43
Imagery

This line helps the reader to understand and picture exactly what the narrator is doing and imagine what is about to happen.

message 14: by Daniel Arroyo (last edited Apr 27, 2009 07:39AM) (new)

Daniel Arroyo | 27 comments Poppy and Rye / Bran Floca

"He was at the far, smelly end, licking a hunk of salt as i itwere a lollipop." pg.11
Imagery

Gives the reader a sense of what the charate was doing.

Mireya Garcia-Belman :] | 11 comments Forever/ Judy Blume
"And I love you, even though you're an outsy"
"Do belly buttons have a taste? because yours tastes delicious." pg 92-93

I take it more as an exaggeration because it was quite disturbing to read how these teens were handling each other. I think Mrs. Blume could have portrayed this part differently. But for those that it does not disturb, it can be more as imagery.

message 16: by Tenzin Dickyi (last edited May 03, 2009 08:58PM) (new)

Tenzin Dickyi | 23 comments A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

1.The imagery in the book.
2."In the mirror, Marian had her first glimpse of Rasheed: the big, square, ruddy face; the hooked nose; the flushed cheeks that gave the impression of sly cheerfulness; the watery, bloodshot eyes; the crowded teeth, the front two punched together like a gabled roof; the impossibly low hairline, barely two finger widths above the bushy eyebrows; the wall of thick, coarse, salt-and-pepper hair." (pg. 49)
3.With all the detail place in this book, I feel that I can actually see the image in my head, like a movie. And when I can imagine the images in my head I know that the book is written very well.

message 17: by Tanisha Williams (new)

Tanisha Williams | 25 comments 1. Imagery in this book
2. As i seen my mother's body lay there twisted, i seen the red wings come from her body..."as she opened the door, she seen Shane covered with blood on his chest...I have my wings i'm ready to fly shane said happily."
3.This helps the book because it shows how and what he felt when he seen his mother dead after being shot by cops. Shows what he seen when he seen his brother dead after being hit by a car, and how he felt once he slit his wrist, he wanted to be with his family and felt like that was his way home.

message 18: by Ricky (new)

Ricky | 15 comments Book/Author
Lynne Reid banks broken bridge

She didn't feel the prick of the needle in her arm. this is imagery and i liked vocabulary because prick to me seems a little more painful instead of poked or something. It gives it more feeling because pricked is a painful word and she didn't even feel it.

message 19: by Sean Hayes (new)

Sean Hayes | 10 comments Muhammad Ali Biography
1.Metaphor
2."Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee".
3.This helps because its one of the most famous and remembered quotes of all time. It symbolizes how arrogant and confident Muhammad Ali was and how he made boxing entertainment.
