Time for another fresh topic!

Everyone loves to read and even write to music. What do you think pairs well with a book? Do you read in silence? Do certain books require certain types of music?

For example, I like to listen to Metric or Depeche Mode for William Gibson. Who are your favorites?

C.E. Kilgore (cekilgore) I write with music (a very wide range of stuff depending on the mood of the scene I'm working on), but I prefer to read in silence. If I listen to music while reading, I find my mind wanders away from the text and on to thinking about a scene I could be writing >.<

F.J. Hansen (fjhansen) | 22 comments I read in silence. For a while I tried to read to music, but it didn't work.

For writing, what I listen to often depends what scene I'm working on.

Martine (martinealaplage) I read to silence... always!! Or on the plane with lots of surrounding noises! lol

B.R. Crichton (brcrichton) Silence for me otherwise I find it distracts my attention. Sometimes I have to go back and read a page if any sounds make it in.

Leigha Craig (leighalcraig) | 18 comments I have music playing almost all the time so it would seem unnatural to me to read and write in silence.

I tend to gravitate to certain things when I'm reading, most often chosen after I begin simply because they seem to fit the mood of the book.

When I'm writing, I tend to have a pretty diverse playlist. My current faves: Bear McCreary's Kara Remembers from Battlestar Galactica, Fever Ray's If I Had a Heart, A Tribe Called Red's Tonto's Revenge, Kanye West's No Church in the Wild, and AWOLNATION's Sail. I like to enhance my scene's mood by what I listen to and I choose my music accordingly. For example, I couldn't imagine trying to write a moment where my character is navigating a difficult emotional moment while Korn blasted but Korn is perfect for physical conflict or danger.

Really interesting! I used to write in silence and still read in it. Do you guys find lyrics or music more distracting? Or both?

message 8: by Vardan (new)

Vardan Partamyan (vardanpartamyan) | 122 comments both my reading and my writing is done with the background soundtrack. My favorites for writing are the Inception soundtrack, the 300 soundtrack, Gladiator (basically anything by Zimmer is good for me) as well as that band Delerium especially their albums Poem and Karma... good stuff!

message 9: by C.E. (new)

C.E. Kilgore (cekilgore) If you like Zimmer, you might like Lisa Gerrard, who performs the hauntingly beautiful vocals for most of Zimmer's work, such as Gladiator. I listen to her when I'm working on a particularly emotional scene.

Vardan Partamyan (vardanpartamyan) | 122 comments Lisa Gerrard is awesome, have you heard her on the Black Hawk Down soundtrack?

Now I'm curious...reverse engineering time! Which songs do you associate with certain books or scenes? Tell us about the book and scene as well as the song...briefly!

To find the perfect soundtrack I had to search a lot, but finally I found one that (in my opinion) fits perfect!

To authors who are in the begining and don´t have much resources to promote their work: http://ccmixter.org/ it´s a cool site where you can find a lot of liberally licensed music
