Nikki Chartier (nikchartier) My co-blogger at YA Confessional, Cheyanne Young, posted today about her experience with a cover designer. It has a lot of good info and warnings about what can go wrong. I thought I'd pass it on to my indie friends!

B.B. Shepherd (bbshepherd) | 18 comments I haven't run into this but it sounds like something that would catch me offguard too. Thanks for the warning!

Johi (johijenkins) | 6 comments Ouch. Good to know. A few weeks ago I paid a deposit to a cover artist who seems like a total professional (her covers speak for themselves) but she's slow to respond and to keep me informed about her schedule. I have no idea when she will start on my cover. Due to the quality of her work, I assume she's constantly being requested covers, and she may be busy, so I don't want to push and demand she replies to my emails. But I'm starting to get a little nervous.

If you are paying someone for a service you should never be worried about "bothering" them. I think asking her for a time frame is perfectly reasonable. You should probably have a simple contract that states the terms.

Johi (johijenkins) | 6 comments Hey Jessica – your comment gave me the inspiration* (*read: balls) to email her. She got back with me right away. I hope (no, I know) this cover will be worth the wait!

I'm glad it worked out!

I have a few artists I worked with and they never feel like I'm bothering them because they want me to be happy with the finished product. Which works because when I love it I recommend them to others with similar projects in mind :)

Tom Krug (thomas_krug) | 4 comments Sorry to hear about your troubles, Nikki. Saving a fellow artist some cash seems like something a decent human being would have no trouble with, so I can't blame you for agreeing to 'gift' that cash. Definitely something to look out for. Thanks for the advice.
