SkepticallySpeaking #213 Bird Brains

I haven't heard this episode yet, but I did have a chance to hang out with Desiree Schell last year at Science Online 2012. I think she is an excellent host.
I heard a podcast not too long ago about scrub jays and caching food. Amazing. This podcast goes a step further describing brain functionality and what enables this family of birds to do what they do. The front part of the brain is larger than average. The hypothalamus grows and shrinks based on seasonal needs, memory vs cognitive ability. They make and use tools. My comment, the brain seems more dynamic/configurable than other animals, maybe even humans, possibly allowing them to do so much more with less.
This was all science. Why do I say that? Dr. John Marzluff who was interviewed speaks of anecdotal evidence and why it is important, that it leads to hypotheses. I like the way this was explained and was very refreshing.
This was an excellent podcast for neuroscience and science both. Hope you listen.
