Fantasy Aficionados discussion

I enjoy reading fantasy, but I'm one of those people that could be considered prudish in my tastes, lol. I don't like books that have sex in them, and those are hard to find.

Sooo....

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good ones for me to look for? 'Cause that would be awesome. :)

You can't go wrong with Brandon Sanderson then. And assuming the issue is depictions of sex you object to not it's existence then David Eddings should do as well.

Brandon Sanderson would definitely be a good choice. Try The Mistborn Trilogy or The Way of Kings.

Are you anti YA? 'Cause, if not, there's tons of good fantasy YA, and even MG, and the most you usually get is kissing. There are exceptions, in the older YA spectrum, but, even then, I've never come across anything graphic.

It's one reason I like YA books, actually.

Patrick's right, Pratchett doesn't, the sex if it happens, happens off screen or page.

You might try some of Robin McKinley. I presume you've read Lord of the Rings?

Elizabeth Moon's The deed of paksenarrion doesn't have sex for the most part but the third book has an intense 5 day torture allegory for the main character that is rather graphic. I really enjoyed the series up until that point.

So, you might not want to start that series.

Book one has an attempted rape.

As far as I've read (book 2) Kristin Britain's Green Rider has no sexy-times, and neither does Jane Lindskold's Through Wolf's Eyes, which is the first in her Firekeeper series.

Any Patricia A. McKillip book would be good too. She does very dreamy fairy tale-esque fantasy like no one else can.

I'm trying to remember if Seanan McGuire's October Daye ( http://www.goodreads.com/series/46749... ) urban fantasy has any sex scenes. I really can't remember any, and I've read all the current ones. There may be one in the first book, but I believe it happens off page and is more implied.

And I absolutely second Howl's Moving Castle. I read it at least twice a year. =]

Are you looking to avoid explicit sexual content, romance scenes, general romantic entanglements, sexual abuse, or all of the above?

I don't know about the rest of the series, but the first October Daye book (Rosemary and Rue) does address a situation involving sexual abuse and statutory rape, although I don't think there were any graphic scenes. (view spoiler)[I think Dare was about 14 when Devlin was abusing her, right? And from what I remember, Toby was also quite young, so whatever else was going on and however accepting the females involved were, I think the book does thematically include at least statutory rape (hide spoiler)].

Another UF to consider is Neverwhere; there is basically no romance component and I don't think it contains any graphic scenes.

How about Naomi Novak's Temeraire series(His Majesty's Dragon)? I only read the first few, but I don't remember anything sexually explicit.

Oh, and also Stephen R. Lawhead--I don't think I ever ran across anything sexually explicit in any of his books that I've read.

Patricia Briggs never has explicit sex. Her MercedesThompson series is excellent. The first book is Moon Called (don't go by the cover!)and each book gets better from there.

I agree there are lots of great YA books! Daughter of Smoke & Bone is one of my favourites.

I think two of my favourite reads this year have been The Snow Child and The Child Thief thanks to Chrisfor those! It is good to find you here!

Charles De Lint does not have graphic sex in his novels. Someplace to Be Flying or Forests of the Heart from his Newford series would be a good place to start.
I have only read two books by Emma BullFinder andWar for the Oaks but I want to read more. She is good and very different. Another author who I have not seen mentioned here but who is also very unique isNina Kiriki Hoffman I love her! My favourite is A Fistful of Sky.

Hiya ;D asexual here. I also have the same problem as you. I'm currently reading RA Salvatore's Drizzt series. While it is quite long, the books are fantastic and I'm quite excited about the prosepct of reading that many more books in the series. While I'm only on the 4th book, there is no sex so far. I can't get over how awesome these books are

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I've read some of these, like Lord of the Rings (one of my favorites) and Howl's Moving Castle, but most of the rest of them I haven't. I'm really looking forward to finding some of these. :)

I agree with Eddings. Pretty wholesome stuff while still flavorful, original and good characters. Tad Williams is pretty good in that department too, as far as his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series.
