I'm a 19-year old college student and I freaking love reading. I carry books around me all the time. Every time a guy asked me what I was reading, I'd say a romance novel. I get teased and they just act like they've never read a romantic book in their lives. Seriously? We all know they do!

Jocelyn (joc113) | 2640 comments Well, intelligent boys admit they've read at least the popular ones. The intelligent boys at my school, anyway. I'm afraid I can't really sympathize with you though, seeing as I really don't enjoy the romance genre myself. But it's probably a self-given stereotype they've grown into--they have to be tough, can't let anyone know they've been a sissy or anything. I'm not sure.

Robin | 5442 comments Yeah...I kind of HATE romance...
I agree with Ducky, though. Sensitivity in men in our current society often leads to the conclusion that they are homosexual or a baby. Therefore I think they are hesitant to admit to "girly" occupations like reading romances.

Fran (franswims) | 3422 comments We had to write creative stories in my gifted class and literally every one of the boys wrote about a guy that played sports and fell in love and the last chapter was them getting married. And all of the girls either wrote horror, adventure, or humor books. Oh my class.

Agreed. I think it's kind of cool.

Imagined Guy: I'm gay.
Imagined Me: That's super cool.
Imagined Guy: Thanks.
Imagined Me: You're welcome. It's true.

@Frances: Your class rules.

Fran (franswims) | 3422 comments Hahaha, only some of them!

ABout the gay thing, I think it's totally fine for people to be gay but I think it's annoying if you go around flaunting it... Like, I don't go around saying 'YEAH THAT'S RIGHT, I LIKE BOYS!' because it's not a big deal and neither should liking the same sex. When gay people go around purposely flaunting the fact that they're gay it kind of annoys me because it shouldn't be a big deal and a lot of people make it out to be one. So, if I were to meet a guy and the second thing to come out of his mouth was 'I'm gay' I'd just be like and I'm not? Why's it matter?

More on topic: My friend was a bookseller for 15 years and now works at a lit agency as an assistant to one of the agents. She has a son that's like 14 and she made him read a bunch of chick novels to understand girls better. XD

I think guys are afraid to admit they read those books cause they know they'll get teased. i suppose maybe they think they'll look like sissy's or wuss.

i love romance books. (just randomly)

Fran (franswims) | 3422 comments I'm totally going to make my son read romance novels now.

Jessica (Goldenfurpro) (goldenfurproductions) | 4919 comments Well...
I'm a girl and while I do read books with romance in it, it's not something I like to openly admit.
So, I don't think it's really a gender thing.
